closed loop or vortec?

I'm a CL guy as not big on the look of equipment a display.

Don't need to buy OM stuff but take a look in their Water Pix forum for pictures of some great CL displays.

I'm a CL fan myself.

I spoke to the folks at OM and they have some great ideas on designs. Basically, I was told to put outlets a few inches from the front, pointing up, outlets 4" above the sand in the back and the return near the top of the back. This set up creates movement from bottom, to front, up the front to the back. The idea is this helps promote the correct flow to send more proteins to the surface that are then skimmed off.

Seems about right to me.

On my A.G.E. 140 I'm using an OM 4 way/snapper gold closed loop, Tunze wave box, two vortechs MP40-W and two tunze 6055's. The more flow the better!

if you are buildiing from scratch, go with vortech. the initial cost will end up about the same, but the long term cost (electricity usage mainly) advantage goes to vortech.

I got a used tank with closed loop, but had to replumb all the closed loop pipes and get a enw pump, etc. I also tried the vortech route (that is why I know, at least in my case, the initial cost comes to about the same), but decided to just go with closed loop. had the tank I got not have holes for closed loop, I'll probably end up using vortech.

I had a total nightmare w/ my last closed loop system, pump failed, and kept getting replaced w/ faulty pumps(I guess they had a bad batch, and I kept getting bad ones)
Meanwhile everything I had sat in trash cans in my living room, lost some prized possesions due to this.
W/ vorts, most likely you will have a couple or more, and even if one goes bad, you're not losing the heart of the system, and they are easily replaceable.
I'll never do a loop again.
Mp60's do work on 1" glass.

$700 - for one of them!? My Dart and OM 4way cost about that - combined - and I'll end up with far more than 1 outlet...

This is true, but you forgot to add plumbing to this and maintenence, as well as time to build it.
Those seals/bearings are real fun to replace on the dart(the pump that failed me and cost me alot of livestock)
Vorts take about 5 mins to pop on and set mode, and you're chillin' in front of your tank! :)
