Cloudy water. Added sugar 18 hours ago.

I added a spoonfull (yeah someone said add 2 spoons, I assumed they ment a table spoon). Now after doing some research I think it was supposed to be a teaspoon.... Anyways I added 1 spoon,(3 tsp) and now my water is slighly cloudy.

I think I have a good skimmer with alot of airation. Its a Precision Marine Bullet 1 with a mag 12 driving it.

Should I wait till the water clears up before dosing? Should I continue to dose it with sugar tonight while it is still cloudy? And if so how much? I was thinking about going with 1 tsp tonight.

Thanks for any responses.

I remember reading it somewhere that said, if your tank turn cloudy, you have overdosed. I would stop dosing, someone with definite answer can chime in on this. GL

Thanks. I read alot of different things. The germans for example get their water to be cloudy on purpose, then halve their dosage. I obviously overdosed.

Well. It does'nt look terribly cloudy as some other people have described, but it deffinetly is somewhat cloudy.

Im confident my skimmer will aerate the tank enough .

As for the lights, should I leave them on or off?

I would definately stop dosing. If you continue you may risk getting white stringy bacteria all over your rockwork. The lights should be on when you dose and remain on for a couple hours. But after the fact I don't think it matters.

I dont care about getting bacteria in my rockwork, I just dont want to suffocate my tank. Thanks for the reply.

Can anyone else confirm that after a overdose going "cold turkey" is the correct procedure?

I'd say wait a couple days then continue at 1/4 your last dose. But if your not familiar with what your doing, then going for a probiotic "set" would be a lot easier. Try either Polyp Labs or Prodibio; they take a lot of the guesswork out, and also include the AAs you need in a bacteria/carbon-driven system.

Thanks for the reply. Im moving my questions to a big thread I found centering around this subject so I will let this thread die.

Ok its not dead.

The water is getting pretty cloudy now. Lights went off a couple of hours ago.

Im trying to decide if I should go to sleep or not atm.

Cloudy water is not a big deal. it will go away.Wait until it clears up and before dosing again. Dose a bit less next time. A tablespoon does not get my 65g tank cloudy. Every tank is a bit different.

ok i am not sure what this whole sugar thing is about. is this some way of increasing your bacteria? can someone please explain why you are doing this, and should i be doing the same?

OK .. Woke up this morning... My tank is in a complete cloud. I cant see much in it. Its completely covered in a thick cloud.
Yep. I put too much in.

I can see my powder blue. He seems to be ok. How long till this thing goes away?

Not like I did it. There is a safe way of doing it and adding very low doses of sugar to the tank. Theres a big thread somewhere in these forums. Good read.

Whats the purpose of the sugar?

Yeah...I'm gonna need a clarification on the use of sugar in a saltwater tank also.

Sugar is food for bacteria. Add sugar, bacteria grows, tank uses the bacteria for good things.
However, if the bacterial load gets too high, the water parameters can swing wildly. There was a thread where a guys tank went completely BLACK for a week due to excessive bacteria. I have only read about people using sugar to get a new tank cycled. Not all too familiar with using it on an established tank.

There is no real purpose. One word - snakeoil. Too much snakeoil and your tank is cooked. Might as well add the rest of the ingrediants and call is reef soup.

Wonder how much sugar we need to put in the ocean to make it cloudy?

Unbelievable what some people will try on a reef tank.

*Rant Off*

Using sugar doesn't seem right to me and in my opinion would do more harm than good in the cycling process. I would think that it sounds too hard to control. I thought we try and encourage and educate each other on the concept of patience in this hobby.
