Clown color darkening

I am sure this issue has come up many times but unable to use the search function…

I have a pair of tomato clowns that I have had for coming on 3 years now. They were added at different times however they both darkened up (The female much more than the male, the male still has bright orange extremities). They darkened up within months of being added to the tank. What causes this? Is it a cause for concern?
