clown eating rock nem...

i'm seriously bummed... my wife is even worse off... she picked out a pair of fancy clowns awhile back. they were in the nem tank. they were getting to the point were they were starting to experiment with the bta's by bumping them and starting to nuzzle. this morning i noticed one of my rock flower nems spitting out the male clown :****: he was awesome1 he had a white head pattern that made him look like he was wearing a helmet....

here is a quick crappy pic... he was swimming around perfectly fine last night...

maybe he bumped a rock nem and got taken down??? thoughts???

has anyone else had rock nems eat clowns? wondering if i should get rid of the rock nems? they are beautiful, but my bta's and clowns would take priority if i had to choose...

only plus side is that i will probably get rid of the other and get a half dozen small picassos or snowflakes and try to have a group.

anyone want a very nice fancy fairly cheap?

I've never seen or heard of this happening before, but rock flower anemones will not host any type of clownfish. Anemones that don't host fish will not care about fish, which is probably why it stung and ate the fish.

I'm not saying that the nem killed the clown though. Something else could've happened to the fish but the nem just caught the dead body.

Sorry about your clown. Yes, rock flower anemones will eat any fish that happens to hit it. Please reconsider about putting 6 clowns in same tank. There are plenty threads about the disaster that will happen sooner or later...

Yep rock nems are beautiful but mean. They have a fairly powerful sting and I wouldnt doubt if they could easily hold onto a clown. I have 10 in a biocube and have been stung a few times from them.

gotcha... i knew that rock nems didn't host any clowns, but i didn't know they would kill one. it's a shame because i have 8 different very nice rock nems.

i have been thinking about it. i have read/heard many disaster stories. i have also read/heard numerous success stories. my neighbor even has 5 ocellaris and a huge pair of clarki together. he actually had another ocellaris, until he gave me one. i have read/heard of numerous other stories of long term success keeping a harem of clowns.the success stories that i know about all involved getting a bunch of small clowns from the same clutch and adding them at the same time. i'm still undecided, but there is a possibility that i will go that route.

their sting doesn't bother me. eating my clowns bothers me though...

Perhaps, but the ratio is still about 100:1 on disaster vs success stories for a reason. I haven't seen any long-term success stories about that many clowns in a 75 gallon...
