clown fish hosting torch

I've seen a couple threads of people telling me the clowns can kill the torch.

My torch was pretty expensive so I would like to keep it alive somehow.

Is it possible for me to keep them hosting and the torch healthy? ANy sort of husbandry or feeding?

Your best bet is to try and separate them

May try a strawberry basket over the torch. If too big for a strawberry basket, maybe devise an egg crate cover for the torch.

unfortunately there is an RBTA in there. they just don't like it as much! haha

i was thinking this was an option, but is this just a temporary solution. will it prevent the clowns from coming back?

some people just enjoy being obtuse.

Try covering the torch and convincing the clown to find a new home at the same time. I've seen people say they've put up pictures of BTA's hosting clowns to convince theirs to use it. If you can get the BTA hosting the clown the torch will probably be ok to uncover.

This just started in my tank. Have you had any luck?
I have a 5 head torch that is great, I really don't want to have it die on me. I am willing to put an anemone in.

I also would cover the torch, and when lights begin to go low place a flashlight above your nem, often the brighter area will draw their curiosity, and it's going to want a host once refused from the torch

Once clowns have decided something is an acceptable host, it's hard to disabuse them of the notion. About the only solution is to put something better in. Depending on the clown species that usually means one of the harder-to-keep anemone species. Covering the torch is fine, but often as soon as you remove the cover they just go back in.

You can't prevent clownfish from going where they want. Even after my clownfish laid eggs under a RBTA they strayed back to their other favorite host, a frogspawn coral, the same day. I also have a torch coral they have not gone near. I too worried at first that they'd damage the frogspawn coral, but it has thrived. So my experience is if the coral is healthy clownfish can't hurt it.

I had a couple of clowns decide that they wanted my torch coral as their host. At first the torch coral seemed to get bothered by the clowns rubbing against it but after a few days it seemed to no longer care and stayed fully open.

You can try putting a small flower pot near the torch to give the clownfish a new host. It's not pretty but for some reason clownfishes love flower pots so they may move away from the torch.

Years ago I had a pair of SI percs that were started off hosted by a hammer, and on intro of a BTA they ignored it.
When I did a tank swap I put just them and the BTA in, and they went to it.
After a while I added that original hammer, and they looked at it, but stuck to their new BTA, so they do have the ability to adjust.

+1 clay pot will do the trick. Tank breed clown tend to like the clay pot more than anything else, it's the texture of the pot that they like.
