clown fish - white stringy poop

well there is no hard feelings between us, so back to topic here.

pretty informative, anyone else wish to chime?

well here's the tough part - some fish crap will come out like a cloud of dust. and within a split second, it's in the water column. so it's possible to never see a fish actually poop. my coral beauty eats a lot of algae and nori, so it makes sense that it's stool is darker in color. if your clownfish eat mysis, then it could be safe to say the stool would be light colored, but certainly not supposed to be white.

FYI, one of my clowns had white stringy poop after a couple days of being in my tank. I was feeding mostly mysis at the time and read that a strict diet of mysis can lead to that. Changed up the food and no more stringy poop.

yeah, i think im going to hold off on the prazi for just a day or two and monitor them a little bit more after feeding. will be making a small change in their diet for now to see if this helps. if not ill go get the prazi

It is possible that it's just an infection that may clear up on its own. Please keep us updated for future reference. Thanks.

im starting to think this. i saw some pictures of definate parasite infections and although they are similar, there are some differences between the pictures and what my clowns are experiencing. also im at a loss becuz its eatting habits have not diminished. (normally eatting habits regress with parasitic infections)

so we will see

What do you feed your clowns. I found that certain food they eat cause them to have this long stringy white poop. I feed my frozen mysis and ocean nutrition pellets and cyclop-eez

I have ocean nutrition pellets. They love em. Also had some fresh water pellets I was mixing in to try n get rid of them. They ate these. No problem. Also got instant ocean blended food I was gonna try until they started acting funny. Gettin rid of fresh water pellets and stickin with the ocean nutrrion for now. Has stuff in it to boost immune systems.

Bt maybe this stuff is causing their poop to be like this? What is ur experience with these pellets? I use the formula one pellets(smaller than formula 2) and not the flakes.

+1, especially since you already have your clownfish in a qt tank, also prazi is pretty easy on your fish, and it's inexpensive.

actually heard quite different, read numerous stories on ppl that dosed with prazi pro and woke up the next morning with a dead fish due to unbalanced ph.

my clown actually looks healthier this morning than it did last night. i think the colors in its fins are even a little more pronounced. so i will be holding on the prazi like i said.

just a side note, not trying to start arguments,.. but it scared me how many people have posted to go buy "this" or "that" without a 100% confirmation of the problem. why would i want to expose my fish to a cancer causing chemical if the problem is only a simple bacteria infection or diet problem? i feel sorry for all the fish out there that are misdiagnosed and improperly treated.

my 2 cents.

what cancer causing chemicals are you referring to? i think you're being a little dramatic here. nobody said to dump sulfuric acid in the tank. these are treatments that have been proven safe under ideal conditions. why else would they be on the market in the first place?

prazi pro is 100% safe to your entire system (except ornamental worms), so you really can't go wrong with it.

while i agree with diagnosing a problem before treating it, you also have to realize you are just some guy asking a somewhat vague question on an internet forum. and we are just some other guys offering advice based upon the limited information we're given. it's ultimately up to you as to what you want to do, but don't criticize the advice given (for free.) especially since you did no better on your own. know what i mean?

p.s. - nobody woke up the next day to dead fish solely due to prazi pro. they were probably idiots and didn't follow directions.

numerous threads (even reef central ones) say that prazi will lower ph and disolve oxygen.

maybe the cancer thing was about a similar product, but there was a product for treating parasites, think i saw it on dr foster /smith website, and had a clear label of caution: contains a chemical known to the state of california to cause cancer.

*crazy*

In my experience fish poop looks remarkably the same as fish food. At least in colour. Now if your fish grazes alot who knows what the poop would look like, but if all it eats are brown or red pellets then the poop will be brown or red.

wasnt prazi, was something else, but the chemical was Formalin. ring a bell?

Every bottle of formalin I have ever had said it can cause cancer and gloves should be used.

formalin is used as a dip to treat clownfish disease (brooklynella) not internal parasites.

My bigger clown has had string poop probably much like yours. I've dosed with prazi pro for 1 week and i haven't seen it anymore. I dosed my display tank so everyone was treated just in case. So far no ill health from corals, snails or hell even the worms, i have a nice red feather duster who's still around.

However, i agree with you that dosing just for the hell of it sometimes isn't a good idea. What your clown has might clear up on it's own.

I haven't seen my clowns poop normally, but i saw my damsel do it the other day, it's sort of light brown and disperses very quickly in the moving water.

well, i never see one of the clowns poop. the other one has a white string everytime it poops. which tells me that normal poop should disperse quickly and not come in string form. ive given into a prazi treatment and started dosing yesterday
