Clown help

So I'm a bit upset and starting to get a little discouraged. I have now lost my second fish. The first being a diamond goby that jumped the day after I got him. Now I just lost my female clown. Now the question I have is can I get another clown and it will pair up with my current one? Or will I need to replace the one I have with another pair? Will the one I have pair up again? How bad would it be to leave the male alone for a while? I'm also thinking of getting rid of this male and just going a totally different route. Thanks for any comments or help.

You can pair up the current clown. Best way would be to get a much smaller clown, the male you have now will become female and the new one will be a male.

How did the female die? I only ask because if illness related it might be best to wait to get another clown until you solve the issue.

She jumped out of the tank. I went to a friends birthday party last night and forgot to close the lid. I've left the lid open before with no issues but not this time. I thought I was doing well too. I got them from the LFS sick and nursed them back a few months ago. Just for this to happen. Sucks.

This is a little trickier than you might think. Do you QT your fish? Are you attached to the male Clownfish? From the moment that the female is removed or dies, you have as little as 9 days before the male begins to turn into a female. When that happens, if you add another clown that is female, one will kill the other. So you have a few options.

1. You can wait a few months for your current male to turn into a female and then purchase a male clownfish.

2. You can purchase a female and try and get them to pair up, but this has to be done before the male begins to turn into a female.

3. You can buy another male and allow them to figure out which is dominant, at which time the dominant clowfish will become the female.

4. You can sell / give away your male and purchase an already bonded pair.

5. Do nothing and end up with one female clownfish.

I lost my female to an unexplained death and went through this a few months ago. In the end, my clownfish became best friends with my Bristletooth tang and now they follow each other around all day. Clyde (my clownfish) thinks he is a Tang and mimics my Tangs constant picking at the glass and rocks. He has also become a fan of the seaweed sheets I put in the tank recently. It's actually very amusing watching a clownfish try and eat algae off the glass. :D I keep saying 'He', but Clyde is now a girl. :)

Anyway, that's just my experience. Good luck!

What kind of clown is it? If a perc or occ they are typically more receptive to a new mate. How do you know it was a female? Was it much larger? As others have mentioned, you can get another that's smaller and you should be fine. Or you can start over with two babies and they can work out who's the female when the time comes.
