I just picked up a juvie clown from my lfs, I have an idea what it is, but would appreciate input. Thanks, pics can be seen in my image gallery, until I have the time to re-size photos.

Are you saying that you bought that fish and the LFS didn't know that it was A. latezonatus?

That is not something that you just stumble across usually.

Unfreaking believable. I have been looking for Latz clowns for over a year and he lucks out with a mis-ID.

Thanks for the ID marina. I am in Southeastern Va., and we hardly ever get any unusual clowns in this area. Do you know any good lfs in northern Va. that stock unusual clowns; akindynos, allardi, bicinctus, chrysopterus, or latezonatus. Any info you could share would be much appreciated. Thanks-

Aren't Latz clownfish very rare and hard to come by?

Yes, they are. Roll of dice on this particular account.

Thanks for all of the ID input folks. In my decades in the hobby, this is the first and ONLY time I've seen a latz in a lfs. For any odds makers out there, what are my odds of rolling again and finding a second latz?????

Probably not that good. I only know if a few that have made it into retail stores. Most of them are being snatched up by the big online vendors. I am shocked that your LFS got two of them, especially a juv.

There is an LFS here in SoCal that has them once in a while. I think in many cases a LFS isn't willing to stock a clownfish that costs upwards of $80 even when they are available. There just isn't that big a chance that their normal customers will be willing to pay that much for a black and white clown.
Add the fact that they can be a little fragile and its not worth the investment for them.

Triggerfish, I never saw the first one, sold before I got to the shop. I guess it was a latz. Most likely a store employee bought it because it was a latz. I was hoping if they got one, welllllllllll, maybe they'd get another. I may have to shell out $70 bucks for a big clarks first though, so they won't keep telling me yeah, we got one now!!!!!!

Yeah, I'll try to keep you updated. I can keep him cool, and well fed. I'm wondering what causes the blindness in so many of them, has it been proven what causes it, or just theories.

I was chatting with a few guys on rareclownfish.com and they have kept them in both temperate water tanks and tropical temp tanks and in both cases they still went blind. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a dietary issue but nothing has been proven.

Blindness?? Oh no....how the heck am I gonna fit a seeing-eye dog in the tank with my Latz???

.....hmmmm....maybe a dog-faced puffer would work???....hmmmmm

I bet there better than my odds on finding another Thiellei labeled as an orange skunk.:eek2:
