Clown Photo

A couple of people mentioned what a nice looking fish this is. I've had her for 6 years, now that I've done a lot of reading on the subject, I think I appreciate her a little more now. I took some new photos last night, and came up with this one.

That's a black ocellaris,,, fantastic, never seen one quite like it.

Is it from mixed orange occ/black occ parents? Or is it just a black Occ with weird colors?

I breed black occs, so I see a lot of them. Your fish just doesn't look like a percula to me at all.

I don't think I've ever seen a Percula with completely black pelvic or caudal fins. Both dorsal fins being all-black doesn't seem right either.

Definitely an Ocellaris IMO.

Nice clown, I wish I could get mine to stay still long enough to get a decent picture. It doesn't help that my camera is terrible though.

Juck, you say you've never seen a Perc like that. But then you also said you never saw an OCC like that:)

I really dont know, I'm in no position to doubt you. The first pics I posted of her, a couple of people said Wow - Beautiful Onyx!

Rod from Rods Reef saw it and said it's the blackest Percula he's ever seen. I see that guy sells some nice looking fish.
I dont really know much about them, so I cant say. I did read that you can usually tell from the eyes. While she does have some dark from the black stripe coming down, there is an orange ring around the black. Pics of OCC's that I've seen, the black eyes make it very clear.

Anyway, thanks for the compliments everyone, I thought I was going to lose this fish about a week ago. She didnt eat for over a full week. Doing fine now though.

I hope you get some more thoughts on ID. It will make pairing her up much easier.

It does look perc-like to me but I am no expert.

In some ways it would be much better if it is ocellaris, as they grow out faster to market size if you are interested in raising the babies. How big is she?

Oh yeah, meant to add. Great pic, does she really have that clear perimeter on the back portion of her dorsal?

lol,,, well,,I said I've never seen an Occ 'quite' like that,,, and me saying I've never seen a Percula with black pectoral, caudal and dorsal fins is just another way of saying it's an ocellaris. If anyone can show me a pic of a Perc with 5 completely black fins like that then I'd be surprised.

The deeper orange coloration is a sign of a healthy, well-fed ocellaris just as much as it is a sign of it being a Percula. I would give my left nad to have that as a broodstock female. At over 6 years old, it could well be w/c.

I get the occasional juvenile with weird coloration,, right now I have a juvie Black Occ that is almost as orange as a regular Occ. I also have a male regular Occ that is just as bright an orange as any perc I've ever seen.

Could you get a good clear pic of the rays on the dorsal? That might sort it one way or another. :)

Maybe you can work out a trade.... :D

Beautiful fish and photo, and contrats on 6 years with her!

I'd definitely classify it as an orange A. ocellaris. Some ocellaris do develop darker black colors as they age, although I'm not sure why (some of mine have darkened in the same system where others have not--I assume it is genetic). I wouldn't call it a "black" ocellaris though, even though it does have a lot of dark color (and I do breed/raise black o's, orange o's, perculas, etc)--"true black" ocellaris usually have more uniform black color (except for the snout maybe) as they mature.

Here's a "retired" female ORA ocellaris that does have some similar markings (sorry for the poor photo!) When she was sent to me, she and her mate were orange
