clown prices

has anyone noticed the price of clownfish going up or is it just me? for the last several months the fish here are commanding ungodly prices. there are 4 LFS here and they are all within a dollar or two of each other in price

percs and ocellaris go for the same price 29-32.00
clarkii at 35.00
tomatoes 29.00
WSMaroon 29.00
GSMaroon 39.00
and the occasional saddleback at 35.00

not only are the prices up considerably, but the quality of the fish here have gone way down. Is it just local to me or is anyone else seeing this? all of these prices are for juveniles

Those prices seem pretty high to me.

I guess it depends on fish size etc.

small fish prices around here:
A. melanopus: $11
A. clarkii: $14
A. perideraion: $14
A. Ocellaris (black): $42
A. polymnus: $12

These are all prices for small juvies. Mix of CB and WC

I was thinking that maybe the price of gas was driving shipping up, ergo higher fish prices. But I still cant help but think that the vendors here are getting greedy. they give me $3 for every ocellaris I raise and then re-sell them for 30. maybe I need to start playing hardball.

stykthrn,

do you ever get any odd patterned babies? not misbars though.

like anything like the snowflake/picasso

not yet, only the misbar. when i get some more room I am planning on expanding my broodstock to include some picasso clowns though

i initially paid $20 for a picasso, now $49.

more demand, same supply.

Huh!...I hope 2 bills:confused:

Anyway down here in So Cal here is what they go for.

Juvi Clowns are typically 2 bux cheaper...These prices are for good robust little suckers...
Occelaris/Perc:11.00
WSM:14.00/ GSM:15.00
Tomato:10.99
Sabae:9.99
Pink/Orange Skunks:10.00
True Percs:24.00
Fire Clown:13.00
Calrkii:13.00

Thats all I can think of right now.....

my fls has gone up in price and down in quality, to make matters worse its the only game in town. I got my two occelaris (mated pair for $43 in september of 2005. Now clowns half their size are selling for about $27 sometimes $31 buch a piece. All are tankbred/raised and hardly an inch long.

Stykthyn, definately play hardball---- unless you are unloading tiny clowns, of course.
Those stores will have to pay 3x your price from a decent wholesaler, or about 2x from a comercial hatchery, and in both cases they will have to pay shipping and also make enough of an order to bother with.
The stores either assume you only want a little bit (just breeding them for fun!) or are simply thinking you need to unload a lot of fish with only a local market to sell to, and are just taking advantage.

so far it has been only a hobby, I dont have much broodstock so I am not "flooding" the local area with fish, but last year it seemed like an ok deal, it pretty much payed for what I did and I broke even, now that all the prices have shot up(doubled in the last 6 mo) I feel I am getting shafted. I was looking locally to get some new blood, but the prices they are charging just doesnt seem fair, especially in light of all the business I have done with them in the past. 2 of 3 LFS here are mom/pop stores, so I would think they would be sympathetic, but the overall quality of all their fish is way down. I am thinking they are just trying to turn a quick buck and are ultimatly screwing themselves. no one wants poor fish especially when they are overpriced.
