Clown Question

I have two Occlaris Clowns fish and I want to know if I would beable to get two more clowns and if those clowns were black occelaris or regular would they beable to co-exist in a 90 gallon tank. I have one host for my clowns and they haven't taken to it yet but I haven't had for very so. So my questions is would I beable to have four clowns in my tank if I bought another host for the second group of clowns?

depends how long they have been in there. if they have established their territory they may very well not let any other clowns in your tank. you could try and see, they may or may not fight. I have seen people with a tank full of different clowns but it took a lot of dedicated time in selection and when they were added was probably key as well.
 
you can give it a try and see what happens. i had a pair of clowns, one was a black & white ocellaris and one was a regular ocellaris. if they'r still young then they may still be juvenile's, and not yet paired, in which case they may not be as territorial. if you got them already paired then maybe it wouldnt be wise to try. my pair wont even let me stick my hand in the tank lol
 
I would strongly suggest against adding any more clowns to your tank. If you added another one ( or pair ) to your existing pair, the odds are very high that you will end up with just two clowns in the future.
 
I don't think they have paired yet because I haven't seen them do their dominancy thing and their both roughly the same size give or take a millimeter or two. I think I'll try it and if it doesn't work than I'll give them back to the store.

The ones you have now may not have paired up, but in time two of them will pair up, and most likely will kill the odd man out. Before I knew better I tried that, and saw the pair kill the other one.

You are free to try it, but I don't see it working out.
 
I'm talking about adding two other black clowns so wouldn't one group pair up and another group pairs up so their would be two pairs. So their wouldn't be a risk of an odd man out? Also would having two anemones help at all?
 
That would assume that they would all pair up at the same time, which I doubt would happen. And on the off chance that it did happen, they still wouldn't be happy having another pair in the tank. Would get even worse once they started spawning.

Really don't think that having another anemone would help either.

If you do try it, make sure that your LFS will take them back -- in case I am right. And factor in how hard it would be to get them out of the tank.

Like I said you are free to try it, just want you to be aware of the risks in trying this.
 
Om thank you for your help. I just want another pair for the obious reason that onyx are awsome looking and that they might show my dummy clowns how to host in an anemone. If I do try this I'll do it after I get back from my vacation I'm starting in a week so I can look over them. Thanks again for the input Tod!
 
Yea, good idea on making sure you are around for it. And it could take a while before you notice any issues. My 3-some were fine for the first 4 months or so. (( that was about 7 years ago, still have the pair ))

Another option is to just set up another tank. ;) There is a reason why I have 3.

Ya I wish I could have another tank, but that outta of my 15 year old budget seeing I have a $1000 income for a year(if I'm lucky).
 
BTW I clicked your red house and I'm pretty sure those aren't tank photos. There reef photos. How'd you make such a awsome tank?

By being in this hobby for the last ((( EDIT, hit submit too soon )) 16 years and learning from my mistakes over the years. Things have really started to come together over the last 5 years or so. Also, researching and being patient go a long way.

Wow a long time I've been doing it for 5 years and I still feel like a newbie haha, but learning from mistakes is the only way to learn for me it was not ajust my gate valve to much cause then I flooded the carpet, had to drain the tank, rip up the carpet and pay for all the maintenece guys. Hopefully when I've done it for 16 years it will look something like that, but thanks for the tips on the clowns and the wisdom of long term tank beauty.
 
No, thank you for your kind words.

A couple other things that I have learned -- at least that have worked for me -- is that regular water changes go a long way in making things easier. And how to recognize an issue before it because a problem. Fixing a minor issue is so much easier then fixing a big problem -- so don't let minor things go.

And if it makes you feel better, I still spill a lot of water. :)
