if you had 2 females would the smaller change to a male? i know they change from male to female but not sure if its the other way round.

cheers
ben

nope. Once they change to female they can't go back. If you put two females into a tank and its not big enough they probably fight to the death.

ok thanks, mine are young so i guess i wait and see. anyone have a rough idea of age when they change without thinking of sex or do they stay male until they get horny?

No offense, but did any of you bother to read the FAQ sticky at the top of the forum? (hint hint)

someone correct me if im wrong.

clownfish are sexless when young. or they are all born males. and within this group a dominant male will develope. this top male will become a female over 2-4 weeks. and becomes the ruling female of the group. if the female dies, the next dominant male becomes female and takes her place. usualy in the open ocean the supressed males will leave and make their own pairs.

their social behavior is strange compaired to most any other animal but its not hard to understand.

i think i cleared this up. probly missed alot tho. im not a professional, just have a pair myself.

Yes, all clownfish are born sexually undeveloped or "neuter." When dominance rituals begin to take place, certain hormones trigger in the 2 most dominant fish. The most dominant (usually the larges, but not always) becomes the female, while the second most dominant becomes the male. All other individuals that comprise a "family group" are physiologically suppressed to keep any from developing functional sex organs.
