i bought a three inch clown tang 8 days ago from lfs. drip acclimated and he began eating algae from the rocks within 30 min.... he has since been very active eats every time i feed and has even been eating seaweed from my clip. he has shown no signs of being sick or unhealthy actually appeared very happy he was fine when i went to sleep but i woke up to his dead body on sandbed this am. he had no signs of abrasions or nipped fins. he was laying at the base of the rock that my bta is attached .could he have been killed by the nem ? the only level in my tank that raised caution was nitrates were at ten but that couldn't have killed him right?

Clown tangs have a very poor survival track record in captivity. Many up and die after a few days/weeks. They require very large tanks with very high moving water..

ok...i just put a power head in today....but i have three hang on back filters each one is rated for a 75-100 gal tank the create alot of water movement but perhaps not enough ....aquacon.com is where i do my online ordering they said 55 gal min for that tang and when i asked the lfs employee if my 55 was ok he also said yes but apparently i was dooped ?

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I think 6ft minimum 200g+ for a Clown Tang. They can get to a solid ft in the aquarium. A very active fish and is one of the more aggressive tangs.

Next time dont trust the LFS so much. Do your own due diligence from the forum. www.liveaquaria.com generally has good info for quick research.

It might be best to ask questions before buying anymore fish.

G'luck.

I've never ordered from aquacon, so I can't say much about them. What I can say, though, is after reading what you just said I looked on their website and read where they wrote that 55 gallon is minimum for this fish. This is definitely not true. This is a very large fish and a larger sized 200 gallon or larger aquarium is surely required. I just emailed them about that misaccuracy on their website.

Sorry about your fish loss.

Check out their tank recommendations for a Hippo Blue Tang (P. Hepatus): "Requires a 20 gallon or larger aquarium with a number of hiding places and plenty of room to swim.To keep multiple specimens, introduce the entire lot at once into the marine system." These fish grow huge, definitely larger than a 20 gallon aquarium..

I definitely wouldn't go to this place for tank size recommendation advice. Come to this website (somewhere on here there's a place that has tang tank size recommendations), or http://www.liveaquaria.com .

Here are the tang tank sizes: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1946079

I honestly have never really heard of aquacon before now, and after reading their website I went digging for reviews. They have terrible reviews.. I'm surprised you've ever gotten anything in. I would definitely start ordering from a more trusted website, such as http://www.liveaquaria.com (There are many more trusted places but live aquaria is the only place I've ever ordered from, so I can't give any good reviews about anything else.)

i ordered from aquacon twice so far on a referral from a friend. first time everything perfect. second time me n my bro ordered a 250 $ order. i ordered 2 purple pincushion urchins and got green instead. when i went back on their site the description had changed and said assorted pin cushions and it was to their discretion what color they send. they refunded money immediately . my bro ordered blue linkia and it came brown and literally melted away on his live rock on second day. they say that is normal blue linkia are very hard to keep alive?? they say they are going to refund money. we also ordered a zoa package that was to have ten discs with 10-12 on each. we ended up w some that had 25 on each and some that had 2. the pic showed beautiful assorted zoas and descriptions said never send anything brown or ugly well that was a lie. three of the discs had awesome colors the rest were purple and brown. they told me i needed to run my actinics only to see their true beauty. hahaha what a joke. anyhow I've had fish my whole life (26) but only tried saltwater for a little more than a year now. most of that year i had only live rock two cinnamon clowns(mated pair) and a barred zebra goby . it has only been the last two months that i have been trying to turn it into a reef tank. started small with a bta and the zoas. soil guess because im so new to this i just assumed aquacon was not at fault for some reason. shame on me.i did get a beautiful royal sea starfish from them though. i will get a pic and post asap . so after reading reviews from the link you guys sent me ill never order there again. i joined this forum a little less than a week ago and have learned more about this hobby than i ever imagined i would. this forum has made me quite obsessed you might say lol. anyhow i have learned from ppl here that its more than just a hobby its a responsibility. its very aparent to me now that i need to be more than casual about having a saltwater reef tank. thank you all so much and if anyone has any advice on some good starter corals or just general input on making my tank into a reef i would greatly appreciate it

I have tried a clown tang before and exactly the same happened to me... not a great choice for 99.9% of tanks id say. Pity as they are stunning.

I have never seen one happy Aquacon customer on our forum. Clown Tangs are usually considered "expert only" fish, and (IMO & IME) this is true. I think much also has to do with the fish's origin; fish from Indonesia can be subject to a lot of mis-handling along the way. CTs from Fiji and similar sources, generally do much better. Still a very difficult fish to keep, though. You're right about the nitrate, 10ppm is nowhere near dangerous to fish. I won't post any more info on nitrate and fish, My view is controversial. Just research it. Hobbyists should know this stuff.
