clown tang with ich

Well got an amazing looking clown tang from a lfs and was fat and healthy, also eating before I bagged him myself. (long time shopper) Brought him home and did fine for two days fought with my purple tang a little nothing major the usual run around for a new fish. So last night before going to bed I did a last look at the tank for the night with the led blues on and noticed a few dots. So I woke up today and tested everything and it checked out so I did a 20% water change figured sal might be a little off compared to the shop she was at. Also I added a little ph buffer to the tank (usually runs a bit low) so with all this done the ich is still no better and I'm out of ideas. The other fish are doing great. Purp tang, copperband baby clown trigger. Although he's still eating I am worried any suggestions?

bought out of quarantine from the store I put him in almost 2 weeks ago and hes in my 56 column to buy some grow time untill he can can get thrown into my 265! :) nls pellets? online buy?

I would ride it out for 2 weeks as long as you don't have a full blown outbreak BUT the fish must be a strong eater....feed either 1mm or 3mm NLS pellets and lots of them.

If it is ich and you want to have a parasite free tank, then you'll have to remove ALL of your fish and treat them with copper or tank transfer method. In the meantime, leave your infected DT completely fishless for 8 weeks. Otherwise try to keep water quality high, feed well, and hope your fish survive.

When I added my clown tang it had been at a lfs for about 2 months and was spotless. My fish in my tank are spotless as well. BUT it isn't ich free. The clown tang got a few spots on its head and top fin. It would scratch a little along the back wall. But 2 weeks later all was clean.

A couple of months ago I added a powder blue tang and it got a bit of ich in there and again 2 weeks later it was gone. That was mid June. I don't run my tank lights though, only some filtered indirect window light. Also I had a heater on the tank that was keeping it about 86* which I hear shortens the ich life cycle. Either way, my other fish are strong and nothing became of it. I can't say by any means that you'll have the same result.

thanks for all the help on the issue. I wanna stay away from copper at all costs! Don't think that will go over too well with the rest of my reef. im going to go with the heave fed and hope method, and water changes. I hope he makes it, it was my last addition I planned on making.

I apologize if I wasn't clear. When I said 'remove all fish', I meant to take them out of the display tank that has invertebrates in it, and place them into a hospital tank for treatment. I agree that using copper in a tank with invertebrates is a bad idea.

Yea that's what i figured you meant. Well very happy to report that after the day of looking like the tang was dipped in sugar, she's back up and running ich free. It almost looked like the ich was melting off of her. She's doing great really active fish, but not too crazy about most food I put into the tank. Anyone who has a clown tang what are you feeding the only thing she really goes after is the nori I attach to a piece of PVC. Other than that she just grazes. Thanks again!

isn't that an apparent answer following the posting of the topic?

He's saying your tang is hardly "ich free" and that it'll most likely be "back" very soon...

Clown tangs are very tricky fish, need a ton of swimming room, and even a small one shouldn't be in a column tank or attempted by a beginner. You've got a lot going against you with a fish that likes to die under even ideal conditions. You really should be removing your fish, treating them with copper or hyposalinity, and leaving the display fishless for about 6 weeks. You may get lucky and the fish pulls through and fights off the ich on its own, but I doubt it.

yea I've been at this for a while and I know what I was getting into with the clown tang had 2 before that grew and moved on to new tanks. I think the ich will stay around for a bit but destroying my dt would be one royal pain. But everything seems to be doing ok. Doing a water change more than usual and I also dropped sal and raised temp. so ill keep posting. any other ich methods ofther than emptying the display? any meds para gaurd? I hate to add any type of med cuz it usualy makes a mess of things.

Their is no meds out their dont waist ur money only copper cures ich fact

That's not entirely true. You can cure Ich with the tank transfer method. You can also use chloroquine phosphate which works really good on Ich and is much easier on the fish than copper.
