Clown Tang

I love mine but it recently passed away due to a leaked tank. I had it for 7 yr. really aggressive, but I won't hesitate to get another one that's eating.

Beautiful. Sorry to hear

I love lieutenant tangs and orange shoulders. Didn't know they're more docile.

Only way Ive had success with them is getting one thats really small (under 3") that you see hiding a lot in the store so you know they are timid.

Take some time to get them eating well in isolation and then introduce them to the tank and never add any other tangs smaller then it is.

Did that and had a very model citizen along with 9 other tangs for about 4 years till my tank crashed.

I purchased the 3 inch shy timid type 10 years ago and it is now an 8 inch terror. Looking for a new home. He dislikes purple tangs the most followed by hippos, large angels and even clarki clowns.

yep thats what they do.. them and sohals have a reputation for a reason :) be lucky yours is only 8 inches. My 4 yr old used to put blood in the water due to his slashing of other fish

No other tangs or larger fish can be kept with him

I've got a clown and a sohal in my current tank. So far so good. The clown tang was the last tang to b added. This is the order of tangs added to the 300 gallon tank. I started with the sohal I've had him going on 5 years when I had a 150 gallon. Then I got a purple tang about 4 years ago. When I upgraded to a 180. Then a few months later after getting the purple a buddy gave me a yellow tang and a blue tang when his tank crashed. Then a few months later I bought a clown tang that I had for close to 2 years in the 180. The 5 of them pretty much did fine in the 180. Every now and then the clown would try to break ranks and try pinking the sohal, but the sohal would put him in check and everything would go back to normal. Then 10 months ago I broke down the 180 and put up a 300. A few weeks later the clown stopped eating and passed. He was getting so territorial he would rather chase the other fish then eat when it was feeding time. Then 6 months ago a buddy gave me a sailfin that was out growing his 100 gallon. Then last month I bought another clown tang from a buddy that said his clown was terrorizing his 250gal. He said the clown dang near tried to kill all the other fish in his tank. I've had the clown tang with the 5 other tangs and have not had an issue yet. If anything sense adding the clown it has calmed my sohal down a bit. The sohal use to case the purple religiously. Now he seen a little relaxed.
The clown and sohal got into one altercation that I've seen where the clown didn't back down and that's it.

I worked at a LFS about 10 years ago and we had a 8-9" Sohal and wow he had a temper. He was great when he was smaller, but when he hit 7" we had to stop putting our hands in the tank as he would draw blood from your arm if it was in there for more than a split second. He was incredible looking but that's one fish I will never personally own unless I get a huge tank.

I've never had good luck with a clown tang. However, I had a tank with a Hippo, a Yellow, a Sailfin and a Powder Blue. They all got along. I added, at the same time, a Sohal and a Purple. The Sohal was over a foot and the Purple about six inches. Nobody bothered anybody with one exception, the Powder Blue. He was about five inches and he killed the new Purple. The Sohal was a model citizen to the other tangs and to my hands. The two biggest fish were the Sohal and the Sailfin. They never fought.
