Clown triggers- a bad idea?

I've read a lot of info on RC about how aggressive clown triggers can be. Im hoping one you guys may share personal experience about this fish. Is it a bad idea for a noob to get a clown trigger? I was going to attempt to keep it with a mix reef tank with caution. Tell me like it is :)

probably a bad idea, even if they tolerate everything in your tank (which they wont) they're one of the messiest fish in the hobby...serious poop machines...

cool fish though...

yea they can be nasty, they'll even try to bite you which is bad cause they DO have teeth. there are other more docile triggers like blue throats.

blue throats are more adaptable to reefs also, just dont keep shrimp or clams (otherwise known as "dinner" to triggs)

Thx guys- I have read plenty of things about them destroying everything. They really do look awesome - Im surprised how some can manage to keep them.

Btw the blue throat looks pretty cool.

yup..bad idea on a clown in any reef..what size tank because most triggers do get large..I have a blue throat and a niger in my reef and no problems with hermit or snails, but no shrimps..they are on the menu.

+1 on the size, they get big..

yea, their mouths are usually too large to pull a snail or hermit out, but say goodbye to most other inverts.

I knew someone who used to have a baby clown trigger in his reef.. never caused any issues... but then again it was like 2".....

Another person i knew had to have one in his 220 reef. It pretty much made a meal out of most of his corals but never bothered other fish... It was about 5"

Yeah man.. it really sucks. Lots of cool fish out there that I love.. but can't have due to them not being "reef-friendly".

I'm really into puffers and boxfish... but... yeah.

Even some really nice angelfish out there too... but too risky.

Lots of people claim if you keep them well fed they won't disturb anything in your tank... but why take the chance?

When I have my own house.. I'm going to have a FOWLR & separate Reef. :)

Haha- a FOWLR tank would be awesome but limited space does stink!

I wouldn't mind a mini shark tank either ;)
