I had a mated pair of snowflake clowns the male died a few months ago.... was looking at getting a black snowflake clown but I believe its also a female...
They would be in a 55 gallon tank, think it would be ok or shouldnt attempt

Apparently once a clownfish turns female it can't go back to male, my experience with same sex fish in a tank is it never goes well it's always an adversarial relationship.

If it were me I'd wait until a small black snowflake clown became available. I had a similar dilemma with my clowns, I lost the female and my remaining clown most definitely turned female, I waited a while and eventually bought another, much smaller, clownfish hopin that it was still male. I got lucky and it worked out. That's just my two cents, good luck with your search.

All clownfish are born male. They switch to a female as one becomes mature and dominate. If they are in a system that doesn’t have a female then one will eventually turn. I have 6 clownfish in my tank. One was a female and I added 4 more later with no issues(from the same clutch) but most likely you can purchase a single clown fish and add it to your system with little to no worries.
