Clownfish got eggs!

Let me know what is required for the rotifer and green water cultures. I'd be happy to set up both if I have the necessary equipment.

The guy in the pic is the oldest. I have one from the hatch after that one. New hatch is happening right now. I read that the metamorphosis is stressful for the larvae, and I wondered "how can they tell it is stressful?" After watching the morph in process, I understand. It really looks stressful, and some don't live through it.

I've had various accidents, and some unexplained losses (too much food? not enough food? water quality? too much green in the water? not enough green in the water?) If I didn't check the rotifer culture under the scope on a daily basis, I'd end up occasionally feeding them strained water (meaning nothing). I have 4 rotifer cultures going (I've had 3 crash in one day). Juaninsac wasn't exagerating when he said "quit your day job!"

I dote over this fish like a stereotypical worried mother. I will relax a bit once I am convinced they are eating a varied diet! All in all, I think I am getting the hang of this - but it is really time consuming.

I read that a lab in Maryland got a federal grant for $150,000 to try to tank raise clowns on a large scale, and after many months, had 2 juveniles!

If anyone is interested in sharing the responsibility of trying to keep a rotifer culture going, let me know. When I 'harvest' the rotifers to keep the culture from crashing, I could share them. The more cultures that are going, the greater the insurance that if one crashes, there will be others that survive to re-seed a regional co-op.
Im in. It puts this thread back on top. And might get me a look at the little nemos.

I'm in for a regional co-op. Can't stand the idea of having little fishies dropping from starvation while waiting to get a culture overnighted from somewhere (or boosted up to meet demand). I have 4 rotifer cultures going now, but since I have maybe 100 new hatchlings today, I need all the rotifers I've got to keep up the feedings, and don't have any extra rotifers to contribute today. Last hatch, I presume I didn't keep up with demand. One day I had more larvae than I could count, and the very next day, I was down to one.

Well Richard,

Looks like you and I are the only ones in for the rotifer co-op! My culture is a little thin right now. I have determined that Reed's Rotifer Diet is good for a dense rotifer culture, while Phyto feast just doesn't do it.

I have more pics, but they are still in the camera. Should be able to post tomorrow.

Schrun - so far I'm raising orange ocellaris. I'm willing to try with other types if anyone wants to supply the eggs to me.

Sherie, I'm all for helping out with the Rotifer cultures. I won't have the space or equipment available to do this anytime soon, though.

Sherie, I also would love to help out with the rotifer cultures, but need to be trained up in this area. Maybe a discussion for a future meeting, along with a reef nutrition discussion. I know they did one for the northbay reefers on rotifers and cultures and I am very interested to learn.

The company where I got my rotifers has very nice step by step instructions on how to keep the culture going. I have discovered the hard way that if I don't follow almost exactly the steps as recommended, my culture crashes. At this time, it appears that I have 4 crashed cultures. Not all green water is created equal!

Fortunately the 2 (yay - 2 now) clowns that have successfully made it through metamorphosis appear to be eating a mixed diet. As for the last hatch, at first glance, I don't see any of the little buggers any more.

The oldest fish (hatched December 24th) looks like it may be misbarred. The younger one (hatched January 2) is just beginning to get its first bar, starting on the back of its neck. Pics soon. Next batch of eggs will probably be hatching in 2 or 3 days.

Anyone willing to contribute to a re-start for my rotifer culture? Please?
