WOW, i jusy heard my clownfish making noise. it is sooooo cool. i have heard this noise before but never knew it was my clowns. then i read a thread about this and started paying attention, but never heard it. and today while i was playing with a soccer ball in my living room my cousin heard it and went crazy. now they do it very often. But why do the do this? thanks

I think fish usually do this to establish territories, assert dominance on other fish in the group or out of just plain old agression. I have seen angels do this all the time and have heard damsels do this.

my skunk clowns do it too - sometimes when I am moving things in the tank other times when they are shimming up to one another

it almost sounds like a frog is hiding in the tank

fish can make a noise like that either by manipulating their gas bladder or by grinding their pharyngeal teeth - I would guess it is probably the latter because I think the bladder is more like a grouper drum - like a boom

I have a mated pair of damsels and the male does this all the time when I am in front of the tank or messing in it for some reason.

gatorolsen that is exactly what it sounds like, frogs.
bwest- it sounds like a frog
jamesJR- i thought it was a mating call
Reef4Fun- mine do it when i sit in front of the tank also

What kind of clowns do this? All of them or just some? I've never heard mine do this, maybe we're just not on speaking terms!

I think it sounds exactly like that fake sound that racoons on tv are always shown making. Kind of a clicking humm

My mated apir of clarkii clowns do it to. I thought it was just the female at first cleaning the glass as she has put her eggs their. But she also makes that noise when I come close or into the tank. I think it is a warning sound. Like back off before I go get my pistol punk.

:)

This sounds like an electrical short sound...i have been looking for it for a week! *sigh* thought my heater was shorting out and about to go...been watching the tank like a HAWK...
