Clownfish Pairing

I read a lot on this and most recommend adding two juveniles, or adding a juvenile/male to an established female.


However I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I currently have a juvenile osc. clownfish in Qt on the way to my display tank and I've spotted a beautiful mature female Black photon clownfish the LFS had taken in from someone who moved a year or so ago. Would I be able to add her? There should be no power struggle as she is very mature and easily dwarfs my new little black and white osc. Or would she be more likely to just bully the poor little guy to hell? I did manage to find someone breeding them on ebay, but I was under the impression the oddly matched couple responsible for the original black photons had passed on awhile ago before raising anymore batches.

I'd like to try and pair them before the little one matures on his own and then I'd be out of luck. On the other hand I could try the ebay photons?

I see no reason why you can't pair them up. My female perc was alone for seven years when I added a juvie occy clown. She accepted it immediately.

There won't be a problem. The only thing you will see is a show of dominance from female and if the little submits then it should be ok... The only time you see this going in the wrong direction is that the little guy is putting up a fight... If he doesn't submit to her he will get injure or die. Good luck

Usually problems occur if the female has already established a territory in the tank. Adding a female to a new tank to meet a possible mate is usually not a problem.

Sugar - did you have to re-arrange your rockwork for that to happen? Or did it just happen on its own? Curious.

Nope no rearranging, I put the little juvie into a breeder box for a few days to see how she would react. No charging the box on her part, more just curiosity. After a few days, I let the little one out and she pretty much ignored it. It only took a few days for the little one to settle down in the patch of star polyps that she has been using as a host. A year later and she has started laying eggs. The little guy eats them though.
