Clownfish Pairs

Hello,
I was thinking today about the clownfish pairs demand.I was thinking about the demand that they bring.I was just wondering what do you guys think the demand for clownfish pairs are?IMO I think they have a pretty high demand! But is this for CB or WC clowns? It seems to me that most people want CB clowns but also most people want WC Precula and Onyx pairs? What do ya'll think? ???

Price will tell you about the demand. Higher price - higher demand. People like them b/c the seller has taken the risk out of the pairing process. In other words, they are a pair so you don't have to worry about trying to get clowns to pair up. Since the seller has done the work for you, you get to pay for it.

It depends on the fish and what I was wanting to do with them. As far as buying pairs is concerned I would take availability and difficulty in pairing into consideration. For inexpensive and readily available clownfish like ocellaris and percula I would never consider buying them as a pair as they are easy to pair and commonly available. If I was in the market for something that was seldom available, like chrysogasters or leucokranos clowns, I would shell out the cash and get the pair because it's hard enough to find them at all let alone as a pair. The last case scenario would be for clowns that can be more challenging to pair up like maroons. I would rather buy wildcaught clowns if I were to breed them but otherwise wouldn't care one way or the other.

Having worked fish retail in the past I can tell you that people DO want clowns in pairs as most hobbyists either don't understand how clownfish form pairs or want the instant satisfaction of buying a pair already established. That being said, the cost involved in growing out the captive bred fish to where they pair up really drives the price up. I think it is worth it to sell a few as pairs.

see if talking bout percs or occ, pairing shouldn't be an issue for most people, if you follow the general rule of one bigger then the other, or the newest clown being the smallest there "shouldn't" be many problems. if it was pertaining to say maroons, Cinnamon, tomato, clarkii, bicinctus etc. i can understand the reason for pairing. i know at my work we occasionaly have pairs of clowns, usaly maroons, oynx, percs. and they usaly claim them as a "breeding" pair. sometimes its a package deal like, 2 maroons and a BTA. we sell more "single" clowns then we ever would of pairs. but also the whole captive bred vs. wild. i think it would depend on the species, wild occy pairs wouldn't seem to be worth the money, they usaly charge more for a pair, and when pairing an occy is for one to do, so easy it doesn't seem worth it. but if it was wild maroons or A.melanopus, or A.polymnus it would most likely be worth it being as these are the more difficult to pair and may make it easier on the buyer

i believe the demand comes down to specific species and WC or CB.

personaly i like the experience of pairing clowns, it is interesting to watch them go thru the process of one accepting each other and waiting for the future male to submit to the future female and then watching the bond grow over the next couple months. and if you put an anemone in with them and its a great thing to watch.

but i do a agree there is some demand for paired clowns, and a bigger demand in "breeding pairs" but i think most of that prolly already new that :D

Try your hand at occelaris, they are breeder's bread and butter. Two WC pairs will produce enough offsrings to sell and possibly pair babies from the two sets of parents.

Get a pair of fancy clarks if you want to spend all your time raising fry.

Load occelaris fry with quality food enriched with naturose and such to offer good looking offsprings. You will gain some knowledge and develop a relationship with LFSs and among fish keepers in your community.

If you are itching to build a breeding system, put all filtration in the sump and plan for possibility to shut off tank(s) from the main system. Plan for space for rotifers' factory :)

Anemones for propagation should go in the dedicated tank, not with clown broodstock.

Come up with a budget, and don't cut corners. Get the best skimmer, pumps, heaters, back-up units, etc. Initial investment will be high.

Dream big, start small. You can not imagine how much there is to learn :)

Wow lots of long posts THATS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!Thanks for all the info.Ya know I think I will go ahead and get the system going and get some clowns.

KEEP THE POST COMEING!I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY!

so i see in your sig that u will be propagating anemones. i will kepp that in mind for when i go to buy one, that is if you have it up by then.

so any thoughts on what kind of clowns you wanted to pair.

kool, yeh the LTAs we get in at work are never that healthy, and the ones that are tend to be "dully" colored. i need to get one tho cause my clowns are hosting in some golden polyps and im worried they are gonna kill them like the torch they killed:(

My only fear on people on the net selling bonded pairs is that they through 2 in a bag and send them to you. Maybe ther are paired or maybe not. If they are not, chances are they will. But.....
