Clownfish suicide

After returning home today, I was saddened to see one of my clownfish on the floor (apparent suicide attempt).

My question is; since I had a pair of clowns, should I get another one? or should I take the survior to my LFS and get another pair?

Since you do not have much experience in the hobby (from your hobby experience section), I think we should work on figuring out what is going on with your tank.

Tell us more about how long your tank has been running, what you have in there in terms of rock/fish/equipment/size/lighting/overall setup, how long did you have your clownfish, and what type of clowns you had in there. The more we know about your tank and what is going on in it the better we can answer your question.

I apologize if my comments seem basic but there are several reasons why a clown would jump and I just want to help you prevent it happening again.

Fair enough;
My tank setup is as follows; 34 gal Solana rimless (obviously don't keep the glass top on either). I have about 20lb of live sand and 30-35lbs of live rock. In addition to the remaining clown, I have a Coral Beauty Angle, Yellow finned fairy Wasse, Long nosed Hawkfish, Banggai Cardinal, some snails and some hermits.

Lighting is a 20" (150watt, 14k bulb)

My solution was going to be to make a top out of egg crate, but just don't know what to do with the clown fish.

I had the clowns about a month. They were the first fish I added to my tank.

Sorry, don't know exactly what kind of clowns (they are generic and look like Nemo).

Friedrice- get the cover on the tank or you will unfortunately experience continued fish loss. Fish jump for many reasons, and it is often impossible to figure out what is going on, unless inter-fish aggression is obvious. For the cover, opt for tightly woven netting, glass, or acrylic.

As for your actual question. I would let your current clown growout a bit and become female. Then add a 1 inch or smaller mate a few months later. You may have had two juveniles that both wanted to be the female, a fight insued, followed by the fish jumping from the tank. Just shooting for the most typical cause and solution.

This isn't constructive, but...

One of my true percs disappeared the other day. It was there at 9:00AM and not there are 10:00 AM.

I have 7 15-20lb Maine Coon cats. I didn't see any scales in the litterbox, but there's really no doubt that the culprit has fur, a tail, and tufted ears...

it sucks to lose fish, but I am hoping that the eggcrate cover will keep the other fish in.

I think I have a sufficient answer to my original question about keeping only 1 clown.

They won't get out now. Eggcrate is what I used.
