Clowns breeding?

A few days ago after a water change, my female clown began to get really fat. Today i noticed that her egg tube is more pronounced, and the male and female are cleaning a spot on a large rock!!!!!:D :D

Today, i bought RO saltwater at the lfs to do a water change and the salinity is a little lower than the salinity of the tank. I was wondering if the water change would stop their breeding behavior? Will my blue damsel bother them while they are breeding? My blue devil is very peaceful towards the clowns, he never attacks them, but i was wondering if he would bother them while they are breeding? And how soon do you think that i would see eggs?

thanks

i cant see if they are laying eggs or not!! they picked a dark spot, so i cant see if they are laying eggs or just cleaning. The females egg tube has become huge in the last hour!!!!!!!! :( I CANT SEE IF THEY ARE LAYING EGGS!!!! :( i can only see them circling and biting the rock, the female gets really close to the rock and circles very slowly, and then the male will come and follow the same pattern of what the female just did!!! ive read this could just be practice though.

Sounds like they are laying eggs. Leave them alone for a couple of hours and then use a flashlight to check on the nest. It should be bright orange.

Damsels should be OK with the pair. Your clowns will become very protective of the eggs.

Congrats! :)

omg omg omg omg!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WOOOOO :D :D :) :D

ok, this is awsome. What do i feed the fry and how do i collect the fry? how long until they hatch? Would it be better to set up another tank for the fry once i catch them or put them in some kind of a breeder net in the tank? Any good articles on rearing clownfish fry??

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Raising the babies is not extreemly difficult, but it does take a little preparation. You won't be ready in time to raise this first batch of babies. Don't worry, they will likely breed about every 2 weeks for a long time as long as you keep them in good shape and don't move things around in their tank.
The book "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson will give you all the info that you need to raise the babies. Most good LFSs carry it or you can get it on Amazon.com. The only thing in her book that is no longer valid is you don't have to raise your own phytoplankton anymore. It is easy to buy "instant algae" or DT's or a couple other brands of refrigerated or preserved phytoplanktons that work just as well for raising rotifers.
If you don't know what I'm talking about when I refer to phytoplankton and rotifers, then you need to get the book. :)

oh no, what happened???? the female isnt helping the male clean anymore. The male is cleaning, but not as vigorously as he was. There's still no eggs. The female will go look at the male sometimes but isnt helping him anymore...:( :(

chill,,,,, they know what they're doing.

The male often does most of the work. The female's ovipositor can be protruding for a couple of days before and after a spawn.

Just let them be,,, don't disturb anything.

I added a fish yesterday, will it disturb them? They haven't noticed it yet because its been hiding on the other side of the tank and it hasnt made it over to where the clowns are yet...

Btw, I just saw the female helping the male again. I guess i overreacted lol. The pair chases my blue damsel now too

As phender said ... go get the book by Joyce (one of the best books out there). If they are close to laying eggs now you probable don't have enough time to raise enough food for them. It's not just rot's, you have to have something for the rot's to eat and then after that it's brine shrimp (babies). Let them have the first batch of eggs and during that time pick up the book, do some research and get everthing set up to raise your first batch of clowfish.
Contrats on your newly spawing clowns.
Check the Clownfishes forum for a bunch of more info on this.

thanks, i will get the book soon.

The clowns are freaking out now because of a little puffer i added. The stupid puffer keeps swimming where the clowns like to hide and now they keep coming out to chase him off. Then the puffer goes right back to where the clowns are.

grr i hope that puffer doesnt freak out the clowns so much that they wont breed.

They were cleaning it and circling yesterday, but now they arent cleaning it anymore. They still kind of defend the spot, but they aren't doing what they were doing yesterday. I dont get what happened, shes still fat and i can see her ovipositor but its not as big as it was yesterday when they were circling. What happened????:(

It may have not been the cause, but I would think that adding a puffer to a tank where a pair of clowns was preparing to lay their first nest would cause stress enough for the pair to abort their activities; any chance you could remove the new fish?

yea i could set up another tank for him, its weird as he hasnt bothered them all day...when i remove the puffer, how long do you think it will be before the clowns resume their breeding behaviors?

It could be soon or a long time or never. I agree with Juck; just give them the best conditions you can and disturb them as little as possible--they will spawn when they are well-fed and comfortable :)

well i took the puffer out like you said. After i took the puffer out, i saw the male cleaning the rock a couple of times. The pair is getting aggressive towards the damsel and if they see him coming near their rock, they will bite and chase him away.
