Any advice? Its a ritteri magnifica anemone.. the clowns are farm raised. the anemone has only been in for about one week. thx

all i know is that people tell me that clowns will do as they do.. mine have not hosted yet and its been like 3 months..... and i saw at my lfs that they had a pair of clowns in a tank with a anemone and it never hosted for at least a year.. and then all of a sudden (about a month ago) they started to host.. and then they had to move the clowns to another tank.. and then they started to host the anemones in there right away (withen minutes) and also the mushroom coral as well.. so it takes time...

or you can try to put them in a bucket together and see if they will host.. (i want to try that next... ) because it is frustrating.. lol but for my new clowns and anemones in my other tanks.. im gonna climatize them together in a bucket so that hopefully they host at the same time.. and leave it like that for a while and see what happens..

it takes time.. patience is the key to this hobby ( i am really finding that out! lol)

What type of clowns do you have? A natural host and natural symbiont makes a huge difference, tank vs. wild makes zilch difference. Pics?

Almost always when someone says their clownfish won't associate with their anemone, it's when the clownfish would never associate naturally with the anemone. In aquaria clowns will associate with non-natural hosts, even including mushrooms, leather corals, tufts of algae, etc.--all things that would not occur in nature.

Thats an odd one DJ lol. Natural host for those clowns (are you positive its a magnifica and not a BTA or something else, pics?).

You can try spot lighting it at night, shine a flashlight over the top of the anemone and leave it there after lights out. Clowns are attracted to the light and may take interest in the anemone at that point.

My Black Ice Clowns went for my BTAs fast. The female was in within a day or 2. The male was allowed in after about a week.

I had ora premium snowflakes that hosted my haddoni in about 2 days.. They were very curious when I introduced the haddoni... once they hosted the haddoni, I moved them to another take and they would host new haddoni's within minutes afterwards. I think its easier if they have been exposed nem's already. I also think its easier if theres a clown is hosting a nem already and "shows" the other clown what to do. But I don't have those snowflakes anymore..

Instead, I got some ora midnight clowns and they refused to go in the haddoni for over a year. I finally caught them and sold them since they wouldn get in the haddoni....

I just picked up SA fancy snows, very nice ones actually.. Its been two days and no hosting yet... ugh sucks... My plan was to get perculas since I'm only 50% on occelerais but the fancy clowns were just too nice.

Yes, it would be an odd perc that doesn't take to a magnifica very quickly. Especially if it isn't already hosted in some other type of anemone.

Highlighting this part to ask if your clowns have associated with something else in the tank.

I've got a gig in my tank that my ocellaris have completely ignored for over a month. I didn't think this would happen, but the clowns had already had many many clutches of eggs in proximity to a BTA on the other side of the tank.

I put in my new H.Mag yesterday evening, and my clowns were in it before I could get the anemone on the liverock. They are regular ocellaris.Clowns are all differant and will take to anemones quick or may take while.Hopeful yours will soon.

Yes, rssjsb, I know what you mean. Years ago I had an LTA that hosted a tomato. I added a BTA and it took it a while to find the BTA. Once it did, it left the LTA never to return. The BTA was in proximity, as it wasn't a large tank, so I expect your percs would jump ship sooner if they were closer. They will probably eventually anyway, but who knows...an interesting experiment.

I have had a pair of percs with RBTA's for over 2 years and only 1 of them hangs out under them. Very seldom goes she go on it. The male doesnt seem interested in them at all.

I've never had luck with the farm raised clowns. Got a gold bar now that loves my RBTA, but not sure of his origin. Bottom line, I think it's really luck of the draw.

IME, there's nothing you can really do to entice clowns to host. They either will or won't. Sometimes it just takes awhile. If they still won't host after several months you might want to consider swapping out the clowns and/or anemone.

Back in the day, I would only buy clowns/anemone that I saw were already together. For some strange reason this scenario is becoming less & less common at LFS.
