Club meeting ideas

A seasonal topic --- protecting your tank against power outages.

Also, it might be nice to start up a sign up sheet for people willing to do tanksitting (for $ or in exchange).

Erik/Kevin, I'm kind of split down the middle here; I loved hearing Eric B last year, he was really the only one that I found interesting and educational. I'd love to hear Tyree, which we've talked about all this year, BUT, the thought of him talking about coral farming for profit, rather than something educational about his tanks, his experience, his filtration/cryptic methods, etc., doesn't much do it for me (just my opinion though). I know it's going to be hard finding a good middle ground here, between us newbies and you old timers, so I think it's going to be a balancing act obviously.

'What if' we do a poll or something, some sort of democratic vote on what people would most like to see, what the more experienced people want, and the semi-novice folks. (np if you hate the idea). Erik, you've got your job cut out for you!!!

For me, I'd like Adelaide, Tyree, presentations from folks in the club about their tanks. Who are a few that have really, really stood out to you guys who have been in the club for many years?

Also, Michael, go to c-sea.org, in the forums is a forum specifically for tank sitters. I encourage everyone to get to know our site better since there is a lot there that a lot of folks aren't aware of yet that is already available.

Caman, you should also go to c-sea.org. All the membership information is located there.

One thing I also think that the older or more advance people bring is the fact that we HAVE heard these people. We know who is a good speaker, and who is not.

People like Ron Shimek (Whose talks seem like he's just making this stuff up, Eric where does this guy get his stories from?? And I do mean stories!!) As far as Tyree, I have heard him several times, and although he has some great scientific data, his speeches are some of the most boring out there. Half the time he can't even get through his whole presentation because it is so full of statistics and he insists on explaining each one.

Here is a list of Great speakers that have interesting presentations,

Steven Pro
Anthony Calfo
Julian Sprung
Charles Delbeek
Dirk Peterson (George from the zoo might be able to help arrange him to come and give more info. on what SEACOR is doing and how we can get involved)
Joe Yaullou (Totally messed up the spelling on this one)

Or most of the other REGIONAL speakers. Maybe someone from a Wholesaler in LA similar to Bob Fenner, letting people know how the process works of these new Ocean Maricultured corals, or to Explain the CITES permit process and why we have it.

Hi,

Maybe we can partner with the Pittsburgh club to try and cut down some of the cost of getting a speaker to visit this part of the country. How about the guy that runs Tropicorum in Michigan,Dick Perrin? Are there any people in the club that are doing something on the "edge" with their marine systems? Look like some good suggestions here on possible speaker topics.

... OH, sorry were you saying something?

Just another example of how something that seems great to one person might miss the bulk of the members' interests.

I hope you guys don't take this conversation as personal attacks. I am just trying to bring to light what I feel is a serious problem with the way the board and long-time members think when it comes to doing something "yet again". I can take your word for it when you say that Dr. Ron's speach is wacky and I understand not spending the money for him if that is the case. But I think we have enough people who have never heard ANY of the speakers to make it worthwhile to have a number of them visit the club.

As far as partnering with PMASI, I think there are others who may help with the costs such as CORA or NORA too. It may be worth a shot to try to develope relationships with them also.

Things on the "edge" that may be worth discussion: Zeovit, dosing of vodka or sugar, maybe even find someone to talk about LED lighting for the reef aquarium. How about a DIY two-part dosing workshop.

Eric,
Now you get to do what you were elected to do....get us a quality program, make EVERYONE happy, and not spend too much money (i.e., find 'em cheap!) Oh, yeah, save some good speakers for next year!
;)
John

You are never going to please everyone. That is why I try to vary things, a third out of town, big name guest speakers, one third workshops, and one third hometown, beginner skewed presentations.

How about alternating months. One month do something beginner/novice related and then the next month do something more oriented towards the more advanced reefkeeper or new, emerging technologies.

all good ideas! we've got a good part of the year planned out already so this is for the few months left unplanned. But this is all good info for the future of the club.
Erik

These are some good ideas and I hope they are brought up again at roundtable meeting next year so the board has more time to act on them It is hard to make everyone happy when people aren't saying what they want until after the fact A lot of the speakers are booked a year in advance

good luck Eric its not going to be an easy Job

How about having an occasional (quarterly) seperate newbie workshop in addition to the monthly meeting? Hopefully someone experienced would be willing to volunteer. Honestly I think you could do a few programs and just repeat them annually (fragging, system maintenance, system setup, feeding/recipes).

Is there a way to split up the speakers into 2 different nights of the month according to levels. That way everyone could get information that is usable for whatever level of reefing. Maybe even hold them at different members houses, accomplishing the want to see clubmembers aquariums and the need to have a level type speaker. Just a thought.

Speakers usually cost a good deal of money. I don't think there would be enough interest or capable means to do a twice a month meeting. Coming up with speakers and ideas for once a month has been more than a small task in the past and present. Good idea though, but not really do able. Might be something good for club friends to do. I knwo I get together with club members outside of the club once a month or so and b.s. about tanks and stuff.
Erik

Hi All,
I do remember one of our club members having a presentation on do fish really feel pain or maybe one of our members could give a presentation on do wallets really feel pain after a visit to one of the local stores. Ha Ha.

It seems like most of the DIY stuff such as acrylic, or building a reactor would be longer than a 2 hour meeting. Has the board looked into doing a Saturday or Sunday afternoon project day? Like what CORA did with GEO? I think a lot of us would love to get into more DIY type projects but because of limited meeting times just can not get it together. Maybe some of the people good put on a mini workshop...say wiring up ballasts to the sockets or DYI mh ballast set ups and then follow it up with a longer weekend full presentation.

I was wondering how long before Burgman mentioned my talk. I was just about to volunteer, but I am holding off and will only give this talk for all who come to Dave's house for a tour of his tank and to drink ALL his beer.........

Yes, Morgandy I am still alive, but just barely

Maybe we could do a Hudson/Stow area tank tour. I know that there are several tanks around. Examples: Burgman, johndawg, myself, Jim Leyland (hope I spelled that right) and others that I may not know. Just a thought???
