Club meetings

Hi all,

It was great to see so many folks show for the meeting yesterday. I think we are getting 2007 off to a great start! I'd like to go ahead and get the schedule for this years meetings going. We've got 10 that we need to schedule, and with ebay and ac being two of those, we have only 8 that we need to find hosts for. Based on how things worked at last nights meeting I'd like to propose the following schedule as a "flexible" blueprint for each meeting.

For a meeting that starts at 4PM (start time can vary):
4:00 - 4:30 -- People arrive, hang out, etc.
4:30 - 4:45 -- Introductions, club business.
4:45 - 5:15 -- "Topic" presentation and discussion for those who are interested. Those who are not interested in the topic can continue to hang out, look at the tanks, etc.
5:15 until -- ...

I think it worked well to have a round of intros. We can probably also get some name tags for people to wear for future meetings. Also, I would like to try and set a specific repeating time to have the meetings because that way people can plan ahead and may be able to get off of work if they know things will happen at a set time. I propose to have each meeting be on the second Saturday of each month. There may turn out to be a month or two where this will not work, but for the most part it could work.

So with all of that said, who would like to host a meet? Here are the available times. I'll go ahead and snag October.

Another suggestion and we won't get offended if no one likes the idea, is to appoint a person as the presenter (not necessary the person hosting, better yet, not the person hosting, so that food and stuff gets taken care of, and the topic is being learned about prior to the meeting. This gives the person time (couple of weeks) to gather information on the topic from different places, people, the internet, ideas and friends who have used ideas. Not everything works for everyone...but of course many are more experienced which then these people can chime in as an open forum once the presenter has done his job. This will be a great learning experience for everyone. EX. one time we do lighting......the presenter bases his topic to learn prior the the meeting as 1. His experience 2. What he has learned online about his own lighting and other options. 3. The newest lighting being released...etc. Other meeting ideas can be based this same way.....that persons experience with a skimmer, a sump, their plumbing but then have them research out of their "own box" of ideas they learn online, what they have heard from other reefers, what works for them, the newest stuff coming out....etc. Just an idea...if you hate it, no offense, but I would not mind presenting something some time that I don't have alot of experience with because I can be more objective when learning about something and then in the open forum after hear from everyone else about what I have learned. Just a thought!! I am gonna shut up now!

great ideas. I though would like to see meeting days be rotated between saturdays and sundays. I for one could never make a saturday meeting. Also I would think a sunday to be better for the critter as they close earlier that day.

That's pretty much what I had in mind. I thought the presenters could be different than the hosts. I started a second thread on topics/presenters.

That sounds fine with me. Maybe we could still shoot for the second weekend of the month, and then possibly have the host decide the day (Saturday or Sunday). That way we could get the date set way in advance and we'd have a mix of days. So are you volunteering for a Sunday? Maybe the one in March :D

Yes, I honestly prefer sunday's as well for I work and have a scheduled commitment almost every saturday until about 3 and then I am tired!!

Jack- We wouldn't mind hosting a meeting in September... that should give us plenty of time to get all of our projects done :)

sundays are def. better for me and lauren, that is our only guarunteed day off each week. saturdays could be fine with atleast a 3 week notice for a schedule request, but in my profession taking a saturday night off means losing a couple hundred bucks as its the best night of the week. just a suggestion, i im by no means trying to persuade everyone else just to accomidate my schedule. i can, and will, make it happen saturdays or sundays. <~~~steve

Okay, so here is what I have so far:

Second weekend of each month (target weekend for meetings).
Saturday OR Sunday for the meeting day.

Those kids aren't wearing you out, are they;)? I'm assuming you have classes. I'm always amazed at how much energy kids have in classes. I can usually make it through kids and adult classes on the same night (not instructing, so I wear out faster), but they never slow down...

yep, most don't realize until they start teaching (myself included) what it takes to keep the attention of a group of kids. It is amazing how exhausted at the end...I teach usually 2/3 classes at a time, so I am whipped by the time I am done, but honestly...I LOVE IT!!

So here is the latest: We need some volunteers! BTW, the dates are not set in stone, just suggested dates to keep things somewhat regular. If you can do one for a particular month but these dates don't work -- chime in and we can likely move the date.
