CNC Router

Dead Thread Walking!

Dead Thread Walking!

mines still unfinished...it does have leadscrews - i went with 1/2" 8tpi 2 start leadscrews and leadnuts. and the powersupplies are wired. 3 atx supplies in series for 36volt, ~9 amps. no motors or controller, though.
im thinking about the 3 axis 200oz-in kit from hobbycnc...i think that will be plenty for the machine and my needs. so is there any g-code to cut out this lumenlab/joe 2006 machine. i guess if i got mine working it would cut out the parts for this new model. it looks to be considerably stronger than mine, with the torsion boxes and all.

I know he's given out the g-code to people who've ordered kits of his previous machines. Its probably worth PM'ing him at Lumenlab to see if he charges for it. It does look like a solid machine.

i ordered my steppers from hobby cnc. i went with the 200 oz, 3 axis controller. seemed to be pretty reasonable. with 14 feet of the multiconductor wire it was 225$ shipped. hope it isnt too bad to assemble, it looks like i have to populate the controller board and solder all the components myself. suppose thats why they call it a "kit", lol. i've built a few wideband oxygen sensor controllers and it had lots of parts so i think i am up for the challenge. i also ordered the spider couplings from motor to leadscrew from enco. shouldnt be too long, now.

Let us know how it turns out for you. I am still aways from needing electronics so I havent bought any yet. I am going to use a 4 axis controller because I am going to have two steppers on my X axis. Do you have any pictures yet?

i have the sosylva plans and for stepers i am using the http://www.xylotex.com/ setup with the 497oz but i really like to make a metal machine and don't have much idea in this can some one hel;p me out i like to know what are good desent leadscrews and all the setup

you dont need to use the 4th axces to make that work on the x axis. this router in this pic is using 2 900 in oz steppers that are run in tandum using only 3 axis to control XYZ movments. the x movement still needs 2 drivers for the 2 seperate steppers but runs one backwards in a sence. that way they both run in the same direction at the same time.
you may want to consider a rack and pinion style of movement so they dont bind up and cause damage to your router. when they move fast they may not be in sink.

What do you mean run in tandum? I was just going to use a four axis controller and use Mach 3 to run the 4th axis as a slave. How would you wire something like that up?

IF there is anyone interested in building the larger of the Solsylva designs and have some questions I might be able to help.

Here is a pic of mine after painting before I added the steppers and got it running.

I can get a current picture if anybody wants to see it. I have it up and running and I have used it to cut some parts but it still isn't finished. I plan on adding an A-axis soon.

Bean,
Its not that I dont think a single stepper wont drive it, I just want to make sure it doesnt have any kind of racking. I might try it with one screw before I order my electronics and see how it does.

Fluxion,
Looks great. Are you happy with its performance? What have you cut with it?

you can run it single screw if you have the screw under the deck in the middle of the gantry. that way it pulls and pushes evenly.

Yea, I am trying not to do that though.

spazz, I think I saw a machine like yours on ebay the other day. Way out of my price range though.

well the cnc fairy made a delivery today! i got the controller, steppers, and the cable by mail. pretty fast considering it was ordered just a couple days ago. i've got some crappy pix via my moto slvr cell phone, but thats it for now. i dont have anyway to host them, though. the controller was easy to assemble, i put it together in about 2.5 hours. thats as far as i got, though. still lacking the lovejoy couplers from enco. should be in next week hopefully. Fluxion, thats looks like a nice machine...what have you cut with it? What kinda stepper/controller?

yes mach 3 is the only way to control a cnc router. its simple yet complex if needed. the biggest thing is to go slow when you first start out so you dont crash the bits down into the deck. i did that a few times. ha ha ha its not a pretty site. :eek2: :eek1:
