"Cold" picture thread

Ok, a few comments before I choose. Very nice everybody, love the snow. Jay, the dogs are so cool. They look very happy. Louis, by the reef tank? The blue adds a nice flair. Rick, now I want a shake.
Mine was a pansy floating in a cup of ice. After a couple tries, I looked up what causes the cloudiness in it. It seems it's the impurities in the water so I made that one with RO/DI water.
Anywho, for a winner, I'm choosing James. Very simplistic. Nice use of space. James, pick a subject for next week please.

Congrats James, nice image. I was going to do something similar and then saw yours so had to regroup.
Jesse the blue is actually from a gelled flash. Trying to get this flash/lighting thing figured out. It's very new to me but I've come across some stunning stuff by others. It's been interesting to experiment.

When I have done gel on flash heads, one of my favorite things to do is to do a spotlight or "snoot" and point it behind the subject. It makes for an interesting background and allows you to keep the subject in the natural color. Of course it looks like you wanted to achieve the color as you shot it here, but just giving some suggestions in the future for you.
This is somewhat what I am talking about. In this shot I used a slight gold gel to aim towards the background. I was looking for one specifically where I had red chilis and had a blue spotlight off snoot but can't seem to find it:

I'd probably have gone macro on the rightmost ice cube. Lot of interesting variations there.
Jesse, a rules clarification please. When we did this last, there was a "fresh shot" rule, where the picture had to be shot after the announcement of the topic. It encouraged conceptualizing and executing a shot in line with the theme, versus going through one's catalog of images to select something that fits. Are we still doing that?

Yes, and I agree this is something that "should" be done. I also chose my winner with this in mind. There's no way we can tell when every shot is taken, but we can make educated guesses. For those that didn't know, yes the shot should be done after the subject has been defined.

Dkuhlmann, a gel is simply a piece of paper/plastic that is colored and goes over a strobe/flash. This makes the light color change to reflect the gel being used.
