No, it isn't illegal. They are protected in certain areas (CA), but they are still commonly available. I believe many are collected in Mexico:

i would never have a tank like this .. cuz where i live, our room temperature is 86 .. i use a chiller to maintain my tank @ 78
good thing is i dun need a heater

This tank is so beautiful! It's by far one of my favorites. Everytime I look at it it makes me cry!

There's really nothing new to report. The tank still looks the same. These cold water tanks don't have the growth that our warm water tanks do. In the next month or so there will be some changes since I should finally get my hands on some srawberry anemones and I have a few more additions coming from Tasmania that should add a little punch to things. I'm also planning a few local dive/collecting trips when this damn rain stops.

Steve, a few months ago a buddy of mine who owns an LFS around here had a customer bring in 2 5 gallon buckets, full of the strawberry anemones. Big colonies. I don't know what he ended up doing with them, I'm sure most probably died. Next time I run into him, I will ask him if he's able to contact that customer and possibly get some for you.

I just found this thread through another thread. Can't believe the thread has been going on for a couple months! Anyways congrats on the new cold water system. It looks amazing and seeing the white barred makes me miss mine. Yes I lost the last one due to ich. I think the water was just not cold enough for it to really get comfortable in the tank. I kept the temp. at about 60-65 but that is definitely not low enough. So did you get a chance to obtain a female specimen of the white barred? I think when I move out this year I will consider just starting up a cold water system and start...with a pair of White barrs! Maybe you can hook me up with a pair since online sites charge obscene amounts for one white barr. =)

Very impressive temperate setup! Smart thinking on the thick acrylic too, do you anticipate it will sweat at all (during the summer possibly)? I'm sorry if I missed it but how would you compare the energy consumption with a "typical" reef tank of equal size? Last question for now ... your white bar boxfish looks similar to what I've seen occasionally in the reef hobby as "flame boxfish"; do you know if they are one and the same? If so is this fish a temperate species?

I'm in New Zealand right now and have limited internet access. This tank has already gone through a summer.....there's no sweating. The energy consumption is less than an sps reef.....but, more than a fish only tank. There's really no updates to reprt at this time.....maybe when I get back. The white bar boxfish is also called a flame boxfish here in the US.
