i just received a shipment of zoanthids that were shipped usps 2 day express when i opened the box and felt the bags they were very cold to the touch so i got my digital thermometer that i use to check the temp in our hot tubs here at work and it reads 45 degrees. i dont know how long they have been this cold and they havent all melted yet. but just wondering how cold can they get without dieing

That is a good question, but I really don't want to perform the experiment to test it and kill a bunch of zoos :). Personally I think it depends on the zoa, some can amaze you with how hardy they are and some can amaze you with how delicate they are (usually correlated with how much they cost and how much you want them in your tank).

Was there a heat pack in there? I have gotten several shipments in the last three weeks and 2 of them had heat packs due to cooler weather and came in nice and toasty. I would contact the seller and say what the heck.

The temperature is to low for them to survive, however if they haven't melted I would give them a chance. If some of them have melted they will all likely melt. The Captain Americas and magicians probaly have the best chance of making it. 1+ on contacting the seller, pictures of what you have and mentioning the temperature, since unless they just suddenly dropped to that temperature (not likely) it is to low a temperature (assuming the thermometer is accurate) for them to survive.

They may morph in color if they survive. Happened to some Euphyllia corals I got. They were at 48F and half survived.

I have a colony of Eagle Eye zoas and I accidentally squirted hot water at some of them. The ones that got hit developed neon green stripes, but they changed back to normal after about 8 months.
Zoas are very hardy IMO and they should be alright. The question is how long had they been that cold. If it was for a long period of time, they have a slimmer chance of survival.

In my experience cold is better than hot but with all corals any extremes will bad for them. But if they look plump and not rotting then give them a chance.

they all looked ok but they all were very small except the magicians. i have had magicians before so i did know what they looked like and the others i have not had yet so they may be a smaller zoa so the size of them may be normal or they are just immature polyps. i dident see them even try to open up last night but hopefully when i get home they will have straightened back up and will be opening up
