collecting offshore

Prolly a stupid question but.. There's no coral off the island is there? Is there anything cool for tanks you can find offshore?

No corals, but during the annual collection trip people usually get local puffers, sea-horses, lancefish and sometimes butterfly fish baby Volitan lions and the occasional angel or grouper.

We do have a coral native to our waters. Astrangea danae. It's related to Tubastrea. Best found in areas with good water current. As far as critters and legal collecting, any commercial/sport species must be collected in accordance with size and season regulations. Some species such as lobster, and most shellfish, require permits.

How hardy is Astrangea danae? Would it survive in your average reef tank or does it require colder temps to survive?

I've kept it at room temperature, but never tried reef temps. Like tubastrea, it needs to be fed.

Here's a decent picture I found on the MBL's site.
