I know it is illegal to collect most live corals in Florida waters, but is it illegal for aquarists to collect any marine specimens? If not, what are the guidelines? Are fish and invertebrates okay?

thats a great link. i think the next time im in florida ill be getting myself a permit and a bucket!

I have a few q's as I will be visiting florida next week. How much are the permits there? Also, are there any decent reefs with access close to shore, and by close I mean your on the beach and go in the water then your at the reef, as I doubt I will have a boat, although I may be able to rent a jetski and dive off that I guess. I have no clue about any of this as I have never even researched it, so I figure I should start now. Oh, I will be staying in the Orlando area if that makes any difference.

Taikimoto: You'll have to drive to South East, FL if you want to find good reefs to collect from. Most people I know, go all the way down to the Keys.

wow

Sure come on down to the keys and take some more life off our reefs. There almost dead now anyway.
Good luck finding a recordia. When I was a kid 35 years ago I saw thousands. I havnt seen one in five years. and coral! what coral? Brain coral, thats it, all stomped on by a million flippers. Ive watched tourist use there knives to pry off chunks of rock for a piece of life on it. Pretty soon the area looks like the moon.
You want to collect something while your here. Collect the trash left on the reefs by the tourist leaving empty bottles and icebags for pieces of coral, fish, softys. Just my opinion.
I went snorkeling this weekend in the Keys and it made me very sad. I dont think Im going to go back to the Keys, its all dead now. All of it. So if your going to the Keys to collect, good luck, you just might be getting the last one.

the entire keys are off limits to marine collecting anyway. they passed that law last year. all of Monroe county is offlimits.
