colonies???

Ive been looking around the forums for a while and it looks to me as if a lot of people keep on fragging their lps and not letting grow out into colonies of more than 30 polyps or so for acans, or 6" by 6" pieces of chalice, etc. Is this so you guys can fund your tanks and expences? not trying to be rude, just wondering why there arent a lot of colonies. if anyone has colonies, i would love to see pics

When your discussing expensive chalices, like the miami hurricane, mummy eye, watermelon, etc. You basically start off with a frag about the size of your pinky fingernail. In 4 months it'll be the size of your thumbnail. In a year it'll be the size of a half dollar. In 2 years it'll be the size of your palm. In 4 years it'll be 6 inches. Within that time, so many people leave the hobby, most people will want to frag it to get back the $200 they initially paid, then when it grows most people can't resist getting paid $200 for another frag, and another, and another. Then there are the regular obsticles of keeping the coral alive.

Its tough.

Actually I have some nice colonies of micros and acans that have grown over the last 2 years from 3 or 4 polyp frags. People hit me up to frag it, but its too nice to.

But some people here do have nice colonies. If you look through the chalice thread you'll see alot of people with nice size chalices.

I agree with All Delight, most often than not thats the case, but here is mine for your viewing pleasure. I still can't bring myself to bring the dremel to it. Its just too nice to break it apart.

I think that some of what you're seeing is that a lot of people buy frags to keep down the costs. Colonies are both expensive and hard to find for many of the more popluar/exotic corals. I don't think it's necessarily that everyone is fragging, more that many people buy frags.

I know I'll buy frags of the more expensive corals, simply because I don't want to spend $400 on a colony.

sorry about the picture quality......the pictures reflect my camera skills......one in three pictures isn't 1/2 bad........but the other two are worse than that.

LPS just grow slow.......unless you buy a colony.....it's going to be a while before you have one..........

I dont think so. Most of those colonies are being bought at UNREAL per head prices. Colonies are not hard to find at all. Every vendor has them.

Vendors arent getting in 1-3 head aussie acan frags from Australia. They get in large colonies and chop them up to make insane profit. They pay a few hundred per colony for some nice aussie acans. Say they have 75 heads or so. The vendors know they cant sell the whole 75 head colony for $7500. People would say they are insane and laugh but they can certainly chop it up into 25 3 head frags and sell each of them for $300 each and make a profit that has never been imagined in this hobby. Then everybody jumps up and down acting like they got some great deal.

The white knights will lie and say that isnt what is happening but everyone knows that it is the truth.

I know I'd rather buy several frags of different colors than just one colony for the same price. I think alot of people are like that.

Safunk I dunno where your looking at aussie acan frags but I've seen alot of them for around $20 per polyp or less which is less than what I paid for an indo one a few years ago.
I just got some yesterday and love them.
I also see alot of colonies online but dont wanna pay that much for 1 coral.

The bottom line is colorfull corals are going to be more expensive no matter what kind they are because thats what everyone wants.

Look anywhere! I clicked the very 1st sponsor add that sold corals(AA) on here just now and the CHEAPEST aussie frags they have are 1 morph for $60, a bunch for $75-80, and the rest are between $125 and $300 PER HEAD.

I really cant figure out why everyone tries to deny how much these things are sold for:confused: Click on ANY vendor add here and the aussue acan frags are the same price. Minimum $40-60 a head and up to $250-300 a head.

Well I just got several nice frags yesterday from Cherry corals who is a sponsor and didnt pay that much per polyp.

nice to see you here kass and yes I agree if I had to buy anywhere I would go with Cherry Corals just because of how reasonable they are

So I took your advice, and I clicked on Frag Farmers site. And you are waaaaay off.

AUSSIE ACAN #1, $300 about 40 heads = $7.5 a head
AUSSIE ACAN #7, $275 about 11 heads = $25 a head
AUSSIE ACAN #8, $375 about 45 heads = $8.35 a head
AUSSIE ACAN #10, $400 about 25 heads = $16 a head
AUSSIE ACAN #11, $500 about 45 heads = $11.11 a head

Why do you continue to mislead people with $60 or even $300 a head prices.

I really can't figure out why you try to constantly say that vendors are charging $300 a head. By the way I stopped comparing the prices you find because I just don't see it.

I even clicked on the first vendor like you suggested, which is Live Aquaria.

Item # 022908041, $130 about 9 heads = $14.45 a head

To the sites charging a lot more then them?

No. It'll hit a nerve to a poster in this thread.

These acan threads are getting old now, a lot of sites are selling colonies are decent prices. Of course there will always be a few places that over price them though but that pretty much is the case for any type of coral. Shop around and you'll find a good deal.
