Colony Edge Necrosis

So back a few months ago i noticed some of my SPS colonies necrosing along the bottoms of the colony along the edges. what usually causes this? im thinking it was Alk swings...any other ideas?

This happened to me as well. At first i thought it was AEFW, but turns out my alkalinity had been bobbing between 9 & 6 before I finally caught up with it. Switched to Reef Crystals and problem was solved. For some reason my tank has a heavy alkalinity depletion rate. A salt mix with high alkalinity like Reef Crystals was able to re-center my system parameters.

If you've been having swings like me...this may be the cause. It could also be phosphates. I hear that can cause recession around the base of the colony as well. Just don't try and change things too fast and you should be able to recover your receding spots again.

if its along the bottom, it could be alk swings, not enough light getting there, pests, some of my colonies over time have developed this, its just part of the hobby i believe

do you have any pics? I think I have been having a simmiler problem and have also suspected alk swings. I would like to see what you have going on to compare if you have the time. Thank you.

Just to add..take my word for it and try to determine the problem by process of elimination. Don't do what I did and make rash decisions that made things worse.

I'm just now after 5 months starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just goes to show that the old adage is true....

"Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank."

heres an old pic, at first thought it was some slime taht was doin it, then i figured it was probably the dead tissue. you get the picture
