That would put you in the early 70s. You got me really thinking what would you have seen in the 80s. I'm glad you filled us in. I was too busy raising kids to notice anything else!
 
Well, I have some good news and some bad.

First the good news.

I got a Desjardini Sailfin Tang. Really Beautiful. This time lots more vegies.

Now the bad news. I wanted to try to mate my Gold Stripe Maroon Clown, so I got one that was substantially smaller, but my guy instantly went after him.

So I trapped the little guy and waited until after the lights out and the big Clown went to sleep. Then I let the little guy go and he investigated the rocks and sound a place to sleep.
I left for work before the lights came on, but my wife said when the actinics were on everything was fine, MH came on and the big clown killed the little guy. RIP. I'm really bummed! I feel horrible to put the little guy through that. I thought that they might work it out and eventually mate. Won't try that again.

Nice looking Sailfin. Sorry about the GSM :( I have the same color hammer and that one is for sure a fast grower and loooooong sweepers.
 
Sweet; an update! I love those corals. The frogspawn looks especially nice. Sorry about the clownfish though. Nice looking sailfin, I have one myself.

Well, I am afraid that the Tang must be wild caught. Every time I put my hand in the tank to do anything, even put Nori on the clip he hides under a rock. I have never seen such a nervous fish. But he is eating and cruising around, so that's good.

On other news, they are pouring the slab for the new garage and laundry/hall tomorrow.

I have a sailfin. It is a gorgeous fish. Mine is not quite that shy though. When it sees me coming with the nori, it cannot wait to get to the clip. It gives me a chance to load the clip, but as soon as my hand is out of the tank he really goes after the nori.
 
The sailfin is starting to relax a little. Last time I put nori in the clip he didn't run under the rock just to the other side of the tank. So there is hope. :)

I am holding a couple of corals for a guy for the coral farmers market in February and on one of the corals came this starfish.

Usually good, <i>sometimes</i> bad. If it looks bluish in your tank, I wouldn't trust it with SPS. Sorry I can't be more help.

Well I had some hair algae growing on my closed loop returns, the new Tang has made short work of that. I am feeding a 2"-3" piece of Nori daily. I am going to try some spinach, lettuce, kale maybe some other stuff just to see if he likes it better and just for the variety.

I have simply taken the heater off of the RK. I have lost too many heaters through it. It is being run through the Finnex controller. Not quite as accurate but at least it isn't blowing up.

Another guy in our local club gave me an idea. I think I am going to hook the heater back up to the RK but let the heater controller control it. Set the RK to around 81-82 degrees, that way if the heater controller breaks the RK will shut it off before the tank cooks.

BTW it was 83 degrees here yesterday!! :)
 
stile2 just curious if you think they fixed this with the RK2? I was just getting ready to go online and was planning to let the rk2 contoll my heater. Although I think setting the heater slightly lower than the rk unit cut off would probably be a better way to go?
 
Unfortunately no. I talked and worked with DA a lot but basically they just kept blaming the heater manufaturer. But I have had this happen with two different heater manufacturers and have watched the heater channel bounce a tenth of a degree and turn the channel on and off very quickly and burn out the heater.
 
So you basically were setting the heater to a high degree and relying on the controller to shut it off or turn it on as the temp adjusted and the unit provided impulse to do so? Sounded like in your earlier post that you were now going to set the heater to say 76 and the controller to 82 this way if the heater fails and starts to warm up to cook the tank, the controller would then cut it off? This seems like a better approach to me? Also how long duration was it taking to burn out each heater unit?
 
As for the duration of heater failures, the first lasted about 2 or months and the last about three weeks.

Yes to the set up. Before I wanted the more accurate RK controller to control temp. So the RK was set to 78.5 degrees and the heater was set to 82 degrees. So the heater was protecting the tank from cooking.

Now I will have it set up exactly opposite. So the heater contoller is turning the heater on and off and the RK is protecting the tank from cooking.
