Hi--getting back into my reef tank --which sadly I had to leave unattended for several months--been working on it today and there still is a lot of work--however recently came across a product from carib sea called purple up--it is allegedly used to increase coraline--any advise/comments re same. Please advise.

Bob

It works pretty good. Possibley to good. I have a hard time controling it and is now turning into a pain to keep of the acrylic.

I have never had much luck with coraline--I hope this at lets gets me some on the rocks--thanks for the quick reply!

i have never dosed anything but kalk, and i have corraline on everything. I suggest getting a rock with some corraline on it and place it in some direct flow.

I think what is key is the lighting--currently i am running 4x75 vho's--two daytime and two acts--any advise on whether i should switch to all daytimes?? want to concert the current tank to an all anemone tank

calcium, magnesium, and strontium are needed for coralline. I don't think lighting is a huge factor, as it grows in all depths and lighting. Also, if the tank is fairly new, give it time. My tank has been up for about 7 months, and the coralline is just starting to spread now. You could always try using purple up though, i dont see the harm in it.

Lighting's not a huge factor, coraline doesn't need a lot of it (some types will bleach if it gets too much, like if you suddenly change to halides from much lower PC's). It's all in the additives, primarily calcium. You won't have any problems once your calcium is up.

I have the same water circulating through my 75 display and 55g (mostly empty) refugium. I have coralline growth in my refugium (260w PCs) but very little (ok almost none) on the rocks in direct light in my display (800w 10k MH)

I think you can have too much light for coralline. Just my observation.

I too have it in the Fuge and it only has a home depot light and reflector. But its also going crazy in the tank. All my levels are kept up and my calcium has always been to high. Up around 5-600. It doesnt like to grow in the shade like the undersides of rock or in dark places but it grows anywhere the lights shine.

Hi Bob. Don't want to be the only nay-sayer here, but my only problem with PU is the ingredients aren't listed. That raises the delima of what to test for. IMO, PU probably won't hurt, but I'd at least keep an eye on the Ca and Alk levels while using it.

Good point, Chip. I duly noted the lack of ingredients, as well, and feared it was another coral vital crap product, however it is made by caribsea--a reputable company and various websites do lists what it contains--Ca, Iodine, Strontium, etc
