google BBB method. as a former employee of a large pool store. The BBB method is a pool store/ maintenance co. secret only use chlorine/baking soda / borax. You only have to watch chl/ph levels.

I have my cpo and maintain 999900 gallons of crystal clear pool water using chlorine, muriatic, sodium bicarb, and calcium chloride. I use the same cheap stuff in my pool at home.

To maintain hardness all the pools are gunite or tiled and everything I've been taught over the past 10 years has included those four levels for a happy pool and longevity of equipment.
I have no evidence that backs it up as I have always had the guys maintain balance that way. And id rather be safe than sorry. One impeller on one of the main circulation pumps is $3,800 and that was three years ago.

I agree with the hardness needed for tile ,pebbletech, and gunite. however it is unnecessary with above ground pools as long as you use a borax buffer. I have maintained public pools and large university pools and never EVER have seen or heard of a 3800.00 impeller unless it is gold plated and has a brass pole with entertainment next to the pool included lol/ with labor. I would be happy to do said work for a markup like that. an all bronze 575 volt 6' PUMP 3 phase (largest I have seen or used ) with a gph of unnecessary . impeller price retail is 580.00 + labor . 75.00 for labor. this pump could be used for amusement park log rides / water slides etc with over 100' of head with 10,000 gph. . so if you got charged that I am sorry and I hope it didn't hurt. BTW this pump retails for 12k$.

More interesting for me, given that I've never owned a pool but worked for a civil/environmental engineering firm for a while, is comparing aquariums to wastewater treatment plants. Some treatment methods are shockingly similar: aerobic and anaerobic digestion, bio wheels, protein skimming, even carbon dosing and biopellets.

As far as filtration for pools which I did not answer correctly and I apologize if I sounded contrite on earlier posts. Pools generally use sand filtration in the US that is followed by cartridge and DE filtration (also used in the wine industry) UV and ozone are also used to supplement these mechanical filtration systems. Saltwater generators are the new fad however not actual saltwater is produced what it does is take salt and chemically breaks the salt down to chl. by an electrical process. These saltwater pools use the bbb method. My opinion on the "best" would be DE filtration with UV and Ozone suplement. Pricey yet very effective.

Inherited 17 paco pumps that were sold to the original owners incredibly cheap. The impellers are an aluminum bronze and the last I knew were patented by Paco so they were only available thru them. The metal composition im sure has been recreated but the design and shaft taper were one of a kind. Ygpm
