computer fans for hood

The walmart adjustable PS brick is in the area by the phones if I recall. There were also DC/AC converters for car use. The electroics area i guess. The one I got is a Powerline 1300ma. Its has 2, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, 12V settings.

Cool, thanks for the info sjm817 & beatle. With regards to the fan I have containing two wires . . . does it not contain a ground wire? Is that ok to use?

Two wires is fine. You have a 50/50 chance of hooking it up right. If the fan doesn't run, reverse the wires.

so would this work:

And then can somebody explain how to actually connect the fan to it. Do I just solder the wires together? How would I do multiple fans of the same unit?

Thanks again for all of the ideas.
Yes, that would work as long as you dont need more than 600ma total to run the fans. Wire multiple fans in parallel, not series. Yes, you can solder the leads.

OK so I just bought one of these Powerline 1300s, and I'm still a bit confused. I'm only marginally electrically-competent . . .

To connect the fan, do you cut off the connector thats attached to the power supply and the solder the fan wires directly to the wall plug-in? I could also use a brief refresher on parallel vs. series connections. Thanks.

big-lots has 12v power supplies that run at 300 mA. They also have switches on them to run from 12v, 9v, 6v, 3v, so you can actually put the fan at a certain speed. last time i checked the power supplies were 5.99 each.

I am running two fans off a 12v converter that I picked up for about $7. To connect mine, I cut off the round plug, exposed the two wires and attached them to the two fan leads. Works perfect! Two fans, one for sump area, one for hood, cost was under $20.

I used wire clamps. The kind you crush with pliers. The wires are bit too small fore wire nuts and I didn't feel like warming up the soldering iron.

when you hook up the p/s to the fans the connector will probably not match so you cut the connector off of the p/s. Now you have two wire to hook to the (fan) fans. The two wires if color coded, black w/white stripe is positive; the other wire black only is negative. Hook the two wires to your fan(one on each connector lug).

Parallel means the + from the PS goes to the + on all the fans, - goes to - on all the fans. Serial would be stringing them in a chain. It would be easier to show in a pic, but I dont feel like drawing one up right now.

What "wall plug in" do you mean? The fans should be DC and not have an AC type wall plug.

Just cut the cell phone end off and you will find 2 wires, hook them up to the 2 wires of the fan and see if it works, if it doesnt right away when u plug in the powersupply then unplug it quick and switch the wires. Even if u hook it up bakwards u shouldnt blow the fan if fast enough.
