Computer protection

Picked up a new computer today, I decided not to get the Norton, I didn't like it with this one. I remember a few of you telling me about different places that I could download protection and different types. Right now I am thinking just downloading FireFox. Is there something else I should consider looking into.

I like Avast and it does a better job than Norton JMHO. It is also free! I would also download the Zone Labs firewall, also free. good luck!

firefox is good

norton doesn't do anything but eat up memory.

AVG is a good free anti-virus.

i 2nd avg. I have norton's at home but for free stuff AVG is what I tell people.

I happened to be reading some reviews on hardware and software firewalls just a few hours ago. It seems that there are a lot of people that like a personal firewall named something like Allegrosurf or ?? I wish I could remember the name but I'm sure someone else will know. You still need a good anti-virus and I've always had good luck with the Norton Anti Virus. Never had a virus and been running it for over 10 years. Not the same version! :lol:

On my laptop I have Trend Micro antivirus

On my desktop I have Kaspersky antivirus.

I just use the built in windows firewall.

There is a firewall built into windows XP and vista both. On XP I ran the norton personal firwall instead. I'm not sure about the Vista. I'm sure it's improved even more over the XP one. FWIW on my kids computer I just have the windows firewall and the hardware firewall of the router and have no problems either. I also run the antivirus on that. Heck, windows may even have an antivirus now.

Apparently windows defender is an anti-spyware. There is a firewall built in so you would still want the anti virus at a minimum if you don't get more powerful solutions for the spyware and firewall from a 3rd party.

once every 3 months or so I'll download solo antivirus from srnmicro.com (IMO- The best trojan program) I just download the free trial, use it and uninstall.

I do not like any of the symantec programs especially norton

On my laptop it came with Mcaffe Security Suite and works well, if you have charter, they have a free security download that works well.

well spent the last few hours hooking up the new computer. WOW, this is big. I got the firefox downloading, and the vista in. Probly check out the AVG.
I got the gateway GM5420, I don't know about computers,they said it will do everything, but it sure cost enough, it better be good. It came with the 22inch wide screen, It is like sitting in front row at the movies. I bet Chelsey pictures will really look good on this.

I have AVG and love it, checks for viruses evry morn and updates too.

I use trendmicro's housecall online virus scanner about monthly...works great for me and gets rid of nearly everything.
