I checked my tap water today with my refractometer and it came up as 0. I tested it after the ro and zero as well. I have calibration fluid and its spot on. Is this possible to have o tds in my tap water? And if so do i even need ro?

Refractometers are used to measure salinity (amount of dissolved salt in water)... not TDS. You would need a TDS meter to measure that..

right....you need a TDS meter, not a refractometer.

If your RO system is making waste water then your tap is not 0 TDS.

What in your case do you use your refractometer for then? If you were thinking a refracometer is for TDS then how are you measuring salinity?

Ro output is always 5 parts waste to 1 part clean output regardless of your tap water tds. Meaning, for every 1 gallon output, you have 5 gallons of waste water.

Anyway, your ro sg should be 1.0.

lol that was dumb of me. i should have known that. thanks thoughe. Whats the average cost of a tds meter. Would be nice to know when my filters go bad. Also what do u mean by waste water? im guessing the waste goes down the drain right?
