Connetquot Class Tank

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Brad. I went to Connetquot, did my student teaching there, a leave replacement, and now I sub there too.

Scott (shyland83) also graduated from Connetquot and works there as well.

The school has a 75gal reef tank that used to be beautiful. However, since the teacher who donated his time, money and efforts has retired, the tank has gone by the wayside.

Scott and I have decided that we are going to try to return it to its former glory so that it can be better used as a teaching tool for the living environment and marine ecology classes.

Unfortunately, the only real care the tank gets right now is from an outside company who overcharges and undercares. Getting funding for the tank is a hassle to begin with. There isn't much to begin with but it can only be used at certain places for certain things. So we're gonna have to come up with an alternate plan to get the things we need.

The lighting is 4x96w pc's which seem to burn out on a monthly basis.

Tank info:

equipment:
4x96w pc lighting
Prism protein skimmer
not sure on the return pump size but the way the drains are set up we're probably best off with what they have
there are a few powerheads, could probably use more flow
wet/dry filter, that looks very modifiable ;)

Livestock:
majano majano majano
few bta
pair breeding tomato clowns
yellow watchman
foxface
GINORMOUS brittle star (that we probably shoud find another home for)
As you can see, we have no problem growing mushrooms. We also have donations in there from Vinny (leather) and Christine (capnella) that we are very grateful for.

The plan:

first, we have to take care of the majano problem.

second, we are also planning on thinning the mushrooms for two reasons. 1) to make room for other stuff 2) hopefully to sell/trade to raise money for the tank

third- get the equipment and setup up to par. also to take into account is gonna have to be ease of use/maintenance. I've got Scott kickin around auto top-off ideas.

fourth - we stock it up! the fun part

on the equipment side. Ideal would be a better light setup, insump skimmer, and increased flow in the tank.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or any way they can help out with the tank, all will be greatly appreciated!

I had a majano problem last year. I was planning on just throwing out some of the really bad rocks. I went diving and caught a reef butterfly. tada no more majano. It will be a few months from now and reef butterflies can be hard to find but if you still need one I'll save my first catch for you.

i like that idea Tom and appreciate the offer. Would we need to catch him after he did his job? ie, would the other corals be in jeopardy too?

Stopped by Chris's to pick up a coral for my tank, and to my surprise Chris very generously donated an aqua-c ev120. All we need is the pump (mag 5 or rio 2100).

Pics of your tank came out pretty good Chris, i'll send them your way.

Dexter - thanks for the offer, we appreciate it and we'll let you know when we're ready! an oh, watanabe's....i'll keep my eye out.

THANKS AGAIN CHRIS!

if you want to change the sump intp a partial refugium, I have to get rid of all my macro algae in a week, you can have the light for it also.

That would be great. We have to alter the sump a little to fit the new skimmer in there, so i'm sure we can find room to grow some macro. Send me or Brad a PM and let us know when would be the best to pick it up.

I have some live to trade for a few pieces of the mushroom rock.
Thin out as much as you'd like and I'll send you back with as much rock as you'd need, plus some other frags.

Double saddleback butterflies will make short work of the manjanos as well but I don't have any available.

The Koralia prop units move a lot of water and are cheap too.

3 reefers in one building! I get ripped on for being the "fish geek" in my building and it is probably twice the size of yours. Anything I can do for the tank, let me know.
