Constant algae haze on glass

I also use tap. Within the last week or two, all the sudden I am getting more algae on the glass than usual as well. And just like you, spending money on a RODI unit just isn't in the budget :sad1:

I think the tap water at TRS is the exception, not the rule. Plus, Rochester tap most likely has a different source than Macedon tap.

That said, you can probably pick up distilled water at your local grocery store for <$1/gallon and dilute the tapwater with it, thereby diluting the effects of the tap.

Tap on the 180 @ T.R.S. ? I'm skeptical when he has the RODI running all the time for maint. accounts...
I would agree about something about the spring thing. Something crapped up my RODI.
Fairly new filters all of a sudden turned brown and need a complete 4 filter change.

are you guys newbies or what?

are you guys newbies or what?

a tapwater thread?

Mike- I think your sense of humor is becoming a loose cannon!

Incidentally... Tom has always claimed to use tap on the 180.
But he also claims to do HUGE percentage water changes (which makes a big difference!).... and it's a lfs display....so
how often do you think the glass gets cleaned?

Newbies !!!!! Come on man :)

In all reality it just wasn't in the budget when the tank was set up, hopefully that will change.

I found it interesting that after many months without algae issues, I have seen an increase recently just like the OP.

I get more algae on the eastern side of my tank this time of year when that mysterious yellow globe in the sky shows up again....

I run Purigen in my 65 gal with a skimmer and Rochester tap water for top offs. I only experience algae if my lights are on too long. Love that Purigen water is crystal clear.

I'm in Cali I use tap water (technically we are well water). I just declorinate it and I've got a bit of algae but not enough to give me a headache I just run a filter with carbon my skimmer and uv. Other than a dusting on my hermit crab shells and a bit on the Rock and glass(that gets cleaned every few days). I know RODI is better but for a college student or someone who can't afford to spend that or has a better use for that money I think you can have a successful tank on tap water

I have a "successful tank" that's only seen tap for topoff and hasn't had a water change in over a year.

this thread can quickly go from silly to ludicris... I just hope everyone's pants are better than the ones I can afford!

I don't even want to talk pants: $14.99 tractor supply sale. That's how I afford salt. The OP could very likely build a di filter very affordably: two chambers 5mic and a di cartridge. If you are using 5 gallons per week salt mix at $80 per 200 gallon box (bargain box) that is $2 per week. I think you could easily cut that use in half saving $1 per week. $40-50 could go a long ways improving the water going into the tank.

It's .50 a gallon at any marine aquarium store. If that's not In the budget, the animals should not suffer for it. Just sayin.

Since tap is likely culprit too much wc is bad. Run some phosphate remover, and rinse filter floss daily after scraping glass.

Incorrect.
Using tap for topoff and small percentage water changes will yield higher tds over time.
Large percentage changes would ultimately yield lower tds.

I just spoke with Tom today. TRS uses tap AND ro. They clean glass regularly (no surprise there!)

The 180 sps display looks phenom lit by halides and t5

I'm not suggesting small water changes are "normally" better, but if the tap is the source of phosphate, changing less could be better.

...to pollution.

and... I never said that I couldn't afford $2.50 per week for water. I actually may go that route for a while.

maroonsalty- where are buying your salt for $80/200gl mix? I just picked up a box two weeks ago for $55.
