Controllers - input?

MandM

sick yet brilliant
I've decided to upgrade from a bunch of dial timers and get a controller. I plan to stay in the hobby so I don't want to buy cheap and need to upgrade again soon. Anybody have input on the Reefkeeper Elite with Net? We tend to take trips away, 3-5 days, with a willing but non-reefing son feeding for us. I'm thinking the remote access and alerts would be nice.

Any advice?

When I was doing my research I decided to go with the APEX JR. Its about 50 bucks more but well worth it. Either way you will have to configure some kind of dynamic DNS so to be able to monitor outside of your local network. Also on the Neptune forum on the main RC forum page the amount of help is great.

I too went with the APEX Jr. and have been very happy thus far with functionality and support.

They are map priced so everywhere they should be 149 for the apex jr and then up from there. What I love about mine is being able to configure my lights to go on when I want them to and to turn off if temp gets to high. I also have fans in my canopy (8 110CFM) turn on and turn off depending on temp. I will in the future put all my power heads on a DC8 in the near future.

OK, after doing some research I may go for the Apex lite since it has legacy and can run AC jr accessories! (which I have but don't use since I haven't programmed it, but if I can get it on my iPhone, I will :)). The Apex Jr. can't run Aquacontroller accessories.

The dealbreaker for me choosing Apex instead of ReefKeeper is that Apex lets you control stuff via web and ReefKeeper is view-only. I haven't made my purchase yet, but at least I've made my decision.

I'm just glad I saw the lite will use my stuff at home before I bought the Jr. Was thinking. "gee that EB8 on the apex sure looks a lot like my DC8" a little more research and saw my AC Jr is also made by Neptune, Daaah brain fart lol

Was going to sell everything to get Apex but glad I saw THAT before I did!

I run my tank with a reefkeeper elite. I have a net module that allows me to control my tank over the Internet with an app on my iPhone. My reefkeeper even sends me text messages or emails when there is something weird going on with my tank.

I remember reading that the old power bar worked, there was some tiny issue with using the old one. Or maybe it's just that the new one had new features (something about the method of switching on/off being more gentle on certain devices).

That's news to me - I thought the RKE was read-only. Now I'll have to reconsider my plans...

The only thing I don't like about the RKE is you can't name channels. You practically need a chart on where things are plugged in to switch channels on and off. Other then that I really like it.

I went ahead with the Apex, it's in transit. I really like the abililty to name the channels and control it with my iPhone.

I went with Apex Lite. Controlling everything with my iPhone was the deal breaker. Just need to learn the programming language. Took me a long time to figure how to set it up wirelessly and be able to remotely configure everything.

If you go to the main rc forums and scroll down to Neptune in the vendor section they have an unofficial guide to apex but the support from Neptune it tops.

Ordered one on sale but need to wait till in stock to receive it, :bounce1::bounce1::bounce3::bounce2: well I guess that gives me some time to figure out how to program it (and hopefully it gets done unlike the AC jr I have! Never had the time to figure out Aquanotes).

One problem with getting a used one is that the warranty isn't transferable.

(wish it could control cleaning the acrylic now :)).

I have an Apex with an EB8 and EB4. Tank is still in the temp stages while waiting for the buildout to be completed, so I have not been able to start utilizing all th cool stuff that the Apex can do.
