Convert Wet/dry To Refugium

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has had any luck converting a wet/dry into a refugium. I've spotted some wet/dry filters on ebay for a decent price, but I don't wanna use the "bio-balls". I'm basically trying to create a refugium for a 55 gallon tank with minimal use of tools or having to glue together acrylic pieces. Here is an example of the wet/dry I'm talking about.

This can easily be turned into a refugium. If the wet/dry is already in use on your tank, you will want to slowly remove the bioballs (1/4 a week?). After this you can add sand/mud/LR/macros/lights, whatever you want. Good Luck!

Yea, you can do that but wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to make your own? Like go get a 10 or 20 gallon tank and making that a fuge?

yes i just put mine in three weeks ago. i took all of the guts out , drilled 6 1/4" holes in the divider and put 4" of live sand/mud mix in, since then i added multiple diferent macroalgies and everything is starting to grow verry well. oh yea i also drilled two bulkheads near the top to drain into my sump.
i use a small punp to pull water from my sump and fed it into the existing white elbow on the top...it works great, better than ever

i actually used the same exact box for my sump and my refugium and had t build a small stand to get the refug up 4" so i could just drain back into my sump

You an save a ton of money by just using a smaller tank to build a sump/fuge. I made this one out of a 40g for well under $100.

Yes, I converted my Wet/Dry to a "refugium"
I basically took the top lid off and took out the bio balls. I filled the larger area with live rock and macroalgae and the smaller area has my Mag 9.5. Water level is just above the rock and algae. I bought a small PC light from Home Depot to place ontop.
I have a ton of pod growth and my macroalgae is increasingly growing.
