Buying sea salt for cooking is expensive. Does anybody here know if we can use our salt we use for our water as a replacement for buying salt used in cooking? Or are there too many minerals etc?

you are CRAZY????... dont use fish tank salt for your food..

this better be a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto. My parents are both 5'5. Im 6'2. I wish I would have found the source sooner:D

Interesting, I had the same thought the other day while scraping salt creep. I can understand why it is bad, but anybody have proof it is bad? Maybe a little analysis of salt creep?

When times are tough I make salt creep soup. If I have any extra skimmate I usually drip some on old bread I find in the trash behind Ralph's. Damsels can also be a tasty treat...find a hot muffler to cook them on so that you dont have to waste so much money turning on the stove.

Saves money and tastes great!!

trader joe's has a sea salt grinder filled for 99 cents. =)
or you can try to save some cash and make some rock candy with salt...that way you can grow your crystals to your hearts desire.

if anyone wants to bbq a few damsels drop me a pm

For those who laugh, there are several places in the world where they do mine ocean salt and use it for cooking etc.

One place I've actually seen is down in Baja on the Sea of Cortez. They have an area that they flood with ocean water, then block it off and let it dry. They then scrape up the salt residue left and use it.

Supposedly that's the new thing in gormet cooking is to use salt derived from the ocean.

But I thought ASW was supposed to mimic NSW? :D Or at least that's what they keep telling us.

The trace elements are in the NSW, maybe not at some of the high levels that ASW has, like for calicum and maginisum.

Wonder if I could use my salt creep as I DO USE NSW. ;)

Well, ALL salt is sea salt, some is just mined from old salt deposits that are now land areas.

It's not the new thing in cooking to evaporate sea water to make salt, it's the very oldest thing! ;)

I would consider using food grade evaporated sea salt for my tank, but not vice-versa, since synthetic salt mixes use stuff that was never in the ocean to create an artificial version... much of which is probably very bad to consume.

instead of soaking your turkey/chicken in brine water, try taking it to the ocean and dippng it for a few hours in the natural sea water and see how that tastes. hehehe "chicken of the sea" :)

You should try some of my homemade "tropic marin" flavored saltwater taffy.

yum....
