Cool flowerpots

This is my newest acquistion. The polyps on this flowerpot are unlike any others that I've seen, from the contrast in coloration between centers and tentacles to the convexity of the center. I couldn't resist bringing it home.

Hi Dk,

Nice close up's and definitely a cool flowerpot! I have the same or similar species. It is one of my favorite (most of them are though :))

The photo is taken under 10k lighting and the coral is pretty close to the light. When I disturb mine, the oral areas get cone shaped for awhile. The tentacles have always remained pretty thick, but it may be due to the light intensity.......speaking of which, your green goni is getting hammered by the light. If you don't cut the intensity on it, you will lose it. :(

I absolutely LOVE that red goni! I've heard goniporia are hard to keep, is that true?

That red flowerpot you have looks similar to one that I just picked up. I really like the neon color on yours.

I'm also curious about the husbandry of this coral. The specimens that all of you have look amazing!

goniopora.org has some excellent info on the keeping of this coral :)

I want to keep one as well. I heard the one with 12 polyps versus 24 are easier to keep. Is that true?

The 24 is the alveopora
12 is the goniopora,
I would read as much as possible about them if I were you, I have been nursing a sick goni for a month now, it aint easy.
No-one but No-one can tell you exactly what to feed, tank conditions, etc. or why so many people lose them.
One day they will
Good luck.

Actually, goniopora has 24 tenticles per polyp and the alveopora has 12. Keeping one alive for a year or longer seems to be unusual.

Nice specimens pictured above!

One thing is for sure, the red slime remover has a fatal effect on them IME;
Mine died shortly after using it; had it for 1+ yrs

:( I was super depressed!

Doni,
By heck you are right, Ive just put my red torch on em,
sorry about that,,
My other Goni and Alve are actually growing new polyps, it makes you think you have cracked it, but we know better.
It cannot be too long before someone cleverer than me hits on the secret of keeping these fantastic animals regularly.

IME, I've subjected at least 11 different goniopora species to UltraLife Red Slime Remover, and several of them to erythromycin tablets and although they retracted for a day, none of them died; not even the unhealthy ones (recovery experiments).
