Coral Banded Shrimp - Reef Safe?

Hi All

What is your experience with the coral banded shrimp? Is it reef safe? Some sites say yes others no. Some say it is harmful to corals, snails, hermits and small fish. Others say it is peaceful.

I just aquired one and have it in the QT right now. Wondering weather or not to put it in the Display Tank?

Personally I have never had a problem with them as long as there isn't another coral banded shrimp to fight with. I have kept them with other shrimp, crabs, snails, and many corals and have never had an issue.

From what I have been reading they are fine as long as they get pleanty to eat. If feeding is neglected they eat whatever is available.

What do you think?

would it harass a porcelain crab? i just picked one up and am concerned about other additions harassing it in the future since it is such a clutz

Porcy crabs are usually swift movers to escaping danger, so I wouldnt really worry about them.

I've had mine for over a year now and no problems with other inverts, including porcelain crab, and corals (SPS, LPS, softies). Mine has killed a 4-wheel goby once, but that fish was really small. Any fish over an inch and you should be fine.

i have kept them in numerous tanks over many year without a serious problem. onlything i have encountered over the years of keeping them is they tend to get agressive when they get bigger. mostly with my fish though.

I've had mine for over 3 years now. It's been with LPS, SPS, Zoas, Leathers, Skunk Cleaners, many BL Hermits, some Scarlet Hermits, Electric Blue Hermit, gobies, blennies, starfish and many types of snails without bothering anything. I mostly feed once a day.

I have one in my 125 mixed reef and he hasnt killed or maimed anything.
I have peppermint shrimp, a cleaner shrimp, sea cucumber, hermits, snails, and an anemone and have had no problems

They are opportunistic though so if something comes along and they have an advantage they may take a swipe at it. I've seen him take a swipe at other residents and even eaten an ejected polyp off of my frogspawn coral

Mine is definitely aggressive towards me and makes rude threatening gestures if I get too close to him. He usually gives me the claw pump with his pincers and tries to look tough.

Right after I got him he molted and "threw" his shedding shell at me.

Was a really nasty sight to see.....but a lively fellow who makes the tank that much more interesting.

Here is a pic of the bugger.

Well I put him in the display a few days ago. So far he has been a model citizen. This is the first shrimp to survive my tank. I have had 3 cleaner shrimp and the yellow tang ate them all. I am feeding the tang seaweed strips now and he seems less interested in the shrimp now that there is a constant supply of food to graze on.

I have one in my 30 gal. tall, he does not bother coral or crabs. But i have seen him go after snails and slugs. Nassarius snails are prime example, if he can overpower it and turn it upside down, he will kill it. He completely eradicated my slug population, within a couple of weeks. But i like him, i like to watch him hunt.
