Coral Beauty

Does anyone keep coral beauties? I've read mixed reviews about their 'reef-safe-tyness'.... I ask this because yesterday I saw the most beautiful coral beauty ever at aquarium concepts and bought it on impulse (I know, I know... ) and I don't want it feeding on my corals (mainly zoas)... it seemed chilled out when I put it in and it picked out a nice hole in the LR, but then again it is its first night, so i'm sure it's going to be nice and shy until settled in... any experiences, good/bad?

I've had one for about 2 years and it doesn't pick at my soft corals. I have noticed it picking at live rock occasionally, probably for algae. They reportedly nip at clams and scallops, but the only ones in that tank are food items for my puffer. It is aggressive toward my Neon Dottyback, the feeling is mutual, probably because of the very similar coloration. All in all it's a beautiful, nice fish.

Good luck they will nip for sure-Its really variable between fish(individuals) If u keep a steady feeding regimen-ie same time same amount perhaps and only perhaps u gat away with it. Never guaranteed.

Yeah. I've been doing more targeted reading and it appears that they will tend to nip only when their regular diet of algae (which I have lots of lol) and meaty foods diminishes. Like you said, it looks like it's a matter keeping it well fed and it will likely ignore the corals as they're not its default choice of substenance.
Just wanted to get a feel for others' experiences with these little guys in a reef environment.

I've had mine for a few weeks now, got a Coral Beauty and a Rusty Angel from a fellow reefer on here. I've seen the coral beauty pick once at a colt coral, and then not pick on anything else since then other than bare liverock and algae growing on my overflows, which my Foxface and Sailfin both pick on as well.

I'm saving up to buy an automatic feeder to keep the angels from picking too much, because I've spoken to a few people who have had success with angels in their SPS dominated reefs, and they said the best thing to do is just to autofeed, then they'll never really have any interest in picking.

Also, I do notice that my SPS have less polyp extension than they did before I got the angels, however I have never seen them pick. I'm sure they do at some point, but it hasn't caused any irritation or recession in the SPS short of shortening polyp extension, they still get a little, just not as far out as before.

Otherwise the angels have been great in my tank, and look really beautiful.

Good to know Reefwreak. Maybe now it would be a good time for me to invest in an autofeeder...
I hope the coral beauty does well in my tank. It is a really good looking fish! I'll post some pics when he decides to come out of the rockwork. :)

I have had my Coral Beauty since I started the tank pretty much, and it has never niped at any coral, nor has it picked on any fish. I keep my fish well fed though. It is rather shy to be honest. TH eonly thing it picks on from time to time is live rock, and sheets of Nori....its a great inhabitant. Also I do have a clam and it has never touched it.....like saidbefore very beautiful fish with lots of personality.

my coral beauty is great fish, it just picks at the rock and glass for algae but doesnt bother any of the soft corals. i also keep a flame angel and a juvenile french angel and they all get along just fine

I feed it a mix of food. Once a day its a combination on frozen brine cubes, frozen formula 1 cubes, cyclopeez, flakes soaked in garlic extreme and tank water for 5-10 minutes I makes sure everything is thoroughly mixed and just pour it in all over the tank slowly.....the fish go crazy for about 5 minutes, and the crabs, stars and shrimp pick up the scraps. I do this once a day 4-5 times a week. Two days a week I do not feed anything....basically every 2-3 days depending on how the fish look.

Thanks bishop! I was pleasantly suprised to come home to find him nibbling on that horrid hair algae. All the fish in the tank were out in the open and the corals looked untouched.
So far so good! I can then assume he hasn't harrased any of his tankmates and would rather eat algae than coral. Hell, even the cleaner wrasse was out and he's usually deep in the sand at the slightest sign of stress. Hopefully things will stay that way.

I've had my coral beauty for about 8 months now and it's never once picked at my corals.
It definitely picks on the algae growing on the glass and my live rock.
It's constantly grazing, but never on the corals.

It's also a very mellow inhabitant.
Even tho it's the largest fish in the tank it never bullies any of it's tankmates.
That may change when I decide to finally get the potter's angel and the flame angel I've had my eye on for a while now... ;)

I feed every other day, and I change it up from feeding to feeding.
One day they might get flake, another time it might be frozen mysis, and another time it might be Joe's (nyvp) homemade fishfood mixture.

I'd be suprised IMHO that he's not nipping u are just not seeing him.:smokin:
Nah, I've watched him constantly grazing for hours on end, and he's got a literal smorgasboard of softies and stonies to choose from if he wanted to.
Of course, no two fish are going to behave the same.

I did have one fish in the beginning that was a nipper.
A really beautiful 6" long spanish hog that I ended up giving away to a buddy with a fowlr tank.
I was sorry to see him go, but you do what you gotta do.
If I even suspected that the coral beauty was nipping he'd be gone in a heartbeat.

I guess it all depends on the individual fish's personality. In the case of my fish, his 'true' tendencies will probably show in a few days once he's over the shock of being in a new tank. The fact that he's been feeding on algae is a good sign though.

I had to take mine back, because it was nipping at my LT Anemone.

Got a yellow-eyed / Kole Tang instead.
Not quite as colorful, but has a bit more character than the CB.
