Coral ID Tool

Hey all,

I'm getting really tired of people marking up corals because watermelons are now called Tubbs Redd Ring with Electric skirt... (No offense to Tubbs, just to people who use his name in corals without permission)

Blah, blah, blah, you've heard all this before.

What I was hoping to do is compile pictures and descriptions so you can fill out a short form and ID corals. I was hoping to start with zoas. There are lots of "species", but many can be narrowed down to similar morphs of the same zoa. I plan to list as many morphs as possible, with pictures. Prices are optional, as they change daily. I might add suggested light/flow, but that is so controversial that I'll leave it out for now.

I'm going to start with an excel form and move to HTML if this becomes big enough.

What I need is names, pictures, prices, and support. Oh, and lots of patience. This is a hobby, not a profession. Send me what you have and we can start building this thing together.

Only zoas for now please.

I was aware of Coral Pedia (zoaid.com). The biggest problem I find is that even on that site you have to scroll through all the pictures and find all the similar morphs (sorted alphabetically, not by appearance). Then you have to decide if what you have matches what they show, or if it is a new color morph. Often, suppliers or hobbiests have their own names, so the zoa is submitted twice.

What I want to do is be able to sort the zoas by appearance. Select a couple of criteria and colors and it gives you a list of pictures showing what the zoa could be and what other names it goes by.

Never ending, different city or area, different store, hobbyist. Polyps will be named some stupid different name for notoriety ( they coined a name to it or put their stores name infront of it, sale for greater than face value or to hype a piece of the same polyp that has temporarily morphed due to new/different lighting scheme or tank environment or Stress. or if the polyp is just slightly a LITTLE different from the original piece. The same polyp can be name 100 different names/ids but its the same polyp. Unfortunately as this hobby has fully embraced naming it's passed " way outta hand status ". It is like :deadhorse1: but it is what it is.

Good luck with that tho
