Coral Sharing / DBTC Programs

tank o tang

Thread Lurker
Curious how many people actually participate in their local coral sharing/ don't break the chain programs? Pros/Cons? We have a new club here in southwestern CT and are just starting this program and would be thankful if anyone has any advice.

Suprised that more people don't support this type of coral exchange program. Is it because your club doesn't have one, no local club, or would you rather sell your frags?

IMO it involves too much trust in people one may not really know..I get the feeling it turns into more of "filling my tank for free" kind of thing. Too bad great idea behind it.

Do you formally track them Steven?

FWIW BAR's DBTC has been very successful. I guess it depends on what members seek to get out of a reef club really. BAR members seem to be a very open community in this sense so it's worked wonderfully. We've did a trade with Manhattan Reefs that went great as well.

No, the club doesn't do it, but individual members do. It has always been part of our raffle. Members donate frags. When they do, they fill out a little form (who donated, what it is, aquarium conditions, etc.). The winner gets this little form with the animal. We also encourage people to examine the forms before placing a ticket in to win an animal to make sure they can care for it properly. A lot of times, after the raffle, the winner catches with the donor about additional information. It generates money for the club and is also very successful in building camaraderie amongst the members. The best part is months later when those new members start bringing in raffle donations and they say, "I won the frag that started my colony six months ago from Bob."

Yes it does take alot of trust in people today. It looks like the program is going to be a hit in our club. They really can't fill their tank for free because they also have to donate corals to receive. We are a very small and new club with a great group of guys so it make the trust factor a little easier.
